Hi

My husband and I have been in the USA in Florida for a year. We really don't like the weather here so want to move to California. We had a recent trip to LA and both loved it. We're from the UK and Australia and have lived in London, Glasgow in Scotland, Sydney, Perth and Kalgoorlie in Australia (the most isolated and very rough Australian city). We've been around and are therfore not fearful of making another move.

My husband sails and windsurfs and loves the mountains. I love the outdoors also. We have no children and sold our business in Australia before we moved here. We expect to buy a business when we settle. We are not rich by any means but doing ok. We own property in Australia and the UK and we're willing to sell some if need be to get into the right house. We live activity and must be able to do our sport and be outdoors often.

After living around the world we know about gangs and believe me living in London and Glasgow can open your eyes to anything drug and thug related. That said, safety is high on our agenda. We don't want to worry every time we step outside our door or need to pay off the local thugs to look after our car and then pay again to let all the other thugs and dealers know not to approach us. That is London, even in some of the great areas.

Can anyone give advice. We really look forward to moving.

Thanks in advance, very much appreciated.

wow, that depends on thier housing allowance..Malibu is very pricey, there are lots of safe areas that would work for them as well.

That should be enough information for the forum. So, what color house would you like?

Seriously, there's practically nothing to go on. Budget, location, type of business, schedule (when is this going to happen, etc), will one spouse be employed outside the business? children in the next five years? etc.

What about LA did you like?

I would look at Ventura. Big in ocean activities, bicycling, hiking, etc.

An up and coming downtown with a nightlife.

Los Angeles is within range, particularly if you take the train. Santa Barbara is just a short way up the coast.

Of course... Just a quick response to a somewhat vague question. But, having lived in Malibu on a budget, I know it actually does have everything within walking or biking distance: Mountains, canyons, beaches. And the air is clean.

There are no financial limitations listed, but if so: How to live in Malibu on a budget? Well, for one thing there are two big mobile home parks, right on the beach, and the standard of housing can actually be quite high. And there are other options, too, townhomes etc. All with beautiful seaviews. So, if you want to be able to walk to the sea, much of Malibu is actually less expensive than in the city.

Welcome to LA!

If you need to be at the coast (pricey) so that surfing/windsurfing is totally convenient, then this is a link which tells you the legal surfing areas.

You cannot just surf/windsurf anywhere since it poses a danger to swimmers. We knew someone who was killed in that way, unfortunately.

Los Angeles County Surfing - Surf Spots

If money is no object then you can just pick a place. Malibu has mountains right behind it. But you might have to live on the water to have easy access to the appropriate beach.

Some areas to the south have no mountains handy, but anywhere in SOCal, you can get to the mountains for hiking in a hour or so, usually, worst case.

You did not mention having to work away from home, so without any aditional information, I would pick the locale you like best and search for a home after that.

Hope that helps!

you might be happy some where in culver city or the west side. santa monica might also suit you very well. its close to the beach, close to the mountains. close to chopping and entertainment. it seems like a decent area to check out.

also, there is no need to worry about gangs and thugs, unless you end up n south central or the east side. or pockets of the valley. and sections of hollywood. otherwise the thug problem in LA is overblown. most people can easily avoid the cholos and thugs.
