Just moved into Oxnard and Tujunga in North Hollywood ($995/mo 1bd,1bt). I do not know anything about this area, and I am horrible at geography. I do not drive around much, so when I do.. I seem to get lost often.

Could anyone tell me which area of North Hollywood is dangerous to go, and which areas are pretty safe to just walk around?

Again, I am a total numbnuts going around places.. so if I just know which areas I should avoid, I will remember that place and not go there.

Thank you!

I actually grew up one block from where you are. The area has been cleaned up greatly in the past 3 years due to the opening of the orange/red line, NoHo commons, and the condominium complex on the north side of Oxnard St. There has been an increase of working class families and aspiring actors and actresses moving to the area as a result. There are increased patrols from the LAPD (after all, the police station isn't far from you).

Generally, I would avoid the area bounded by Hatteras on the north, Fair on the east, Tujunga by the west, and Cumpston on the south. The area is notorious for drug dealing (one of the buildings on Tujunga and Hatteras is always rife with gang members at night) and gang fights. North of Oxnard is ok, but there are tweakers walking around every once in a while. Just be careful, and use common sense when you are walking around, especially at night.

Oh, if you are looking for something to eat, there is always In-n-Out on Califa and Lankershim, or my childhood favorite, the burger place on Vineland/Victory (used to be called Chili Judi's, but not sure what it is now).

Thank you so much for your detailed location answers! I hope i got those places right (pictured below). Could u tell me in what area I might go able to jog at night with the least possibility of getting mugged or harmed? It is ok if I have to drive a little bit, then jog. Thank you so much again!

As an avid jogger, I stuck to the neighborhoods in the area to jog rather than the main streets since bikers in North Hollywood always seem to in some euphoric daze on the sidewalk (yes, they bike on the sidewalk). However, I only did this out of convenience since I didn't have a car.

You could always jog at North Hollywood park depending on the time of night we are talking about. The jogging trail starts at Magnolia and Tujunga, so you could either park on the street OR simply walk there, and it goes around the park.

More over, you could go to the trail that starts on Chandler and Vineland and run down it at night.
Depending on how far you want to go, this long trail ends all the way on Chandler and Victory in Burbank (3 miles one way)! Joggers and bikers have separated right of way on this trail, its freshly paved (only opened a few years ago) and goes through some pretty nice areas. You should be fine here at all times of the day and night.

Generally speaking: south of Magnolia is good in The Valley.
Get a Thomas Brothers map of LA and familiarize yourself.
Like all big cities, knowing where you are -and how to get home-
is important to your well being.

North Hollywood can be a little tricky. Just west of where you labeled "Bad," (west of Tujunga), the area is reminiscent of Valley Village. There are tree lined streets and the people are friendly. East of where you labeled bad (East of Vineland, South of Hatteras), the area is also in good transition as it is closer to Burbank and Toluca Lake. As more people are attracted to the area with development in the center, the druggies will be weeded out.

I just heard a story from a local officer where a person who just moved into an apartment saw the drug dealing happening and the police came and busted them. That cleaned up that apartment complex right away. As long as the community is involved and starts caring for their neighborhoods, druggies will move to "safe havens" where people don't care about their neighborhoods.

I expect that area labeled as Bad to change very soon with the recent developments and further plans to clean up that area. That section is smack dab in the center of the Redevelopment agency's map. They want to make that stretch more pedestrian-friendly because of the proximity to the subway.

Just chiming in to say that I live in the red square on the map, right at Lankershim and Burbank and it really isn't that bad. There are always pedestrians walking to and from the transportation hub, and there are the Commons and a nice little shopping center nearby. A new Art Institute also opened recently on Lankershim just south of Chandler. I would say north of Burbank Bl. is not as nice of an area, and there are some pockets off Magnolia, such as Riverton, which are still kind of an urban blight.

If it makes you feel any better, I see more cop cars than civilian cars at times, and the whole Metro area is heavily patrolled.

Oh, quick edit: the rest of the red area on the map is labelled very accurately. That is where I always see the LASD helicopters circling around and shining spotlights. My apartment looks down onto this area and it is mostly drug dealers and low income housing. Stay away.

Is Craner Avenue in North Hollywood safe? The assigned schools in the area have horrible ratings. Please advise.
