With rental car to return and possible new security measures. Note: This trip is NOT at Rose Bowl season! When should we leave Pasadena?

Thanks so much!

(I know this has been asked before, but not for this time/day, AFAIK.)

No later than 6AM. LAX rental car returns are a couple miles away and you may sit there for ten minutes waiting for the shuttle bus to fill up. Traffic at that time will be getting bad. Security is reportedly worse since last week.

Also, personally, I'd rather be an hour early than a minute late. If you get there early, you might have an opportunity to score a exit row seat (unless it's SWA). Too bad LAX doesn't have free wireless internet.

I would think 5 a.m. If you leave at 6 a.m., the freeways will already be getting crowded.

Agreed. I would leave at 6am. Better early than late. When I lived in Pasadena I left plenty of travel time.

If early you can always get breakfast at LAX once you have gone thru security and you can exhale again.

Safe travels!

Wowza. I guess those movies about LA freeways are true! And I thought NJ was bad.

Thanks, everyone!

Since it is a weekday, 5am at the latest.

By 6am you will be hitting commuter traffic, all it takes is one accident and you're in trouble.

Poster who mentioned the rental car bus is right.

let's do the math: 9:30 flight means you should be at the airport by 8:30. since you'll be returning a rental car, you'll want to take another 30 minutes for that, so you should be to the airport by 8am. coming from pasadena, you'll have to go through downtown LA to get to the airport, which is the largest job center in the region. this obviously means that you'll be hitting traffic. luckily, the 110 freeway isn't as bad as other freeways in the region, but the 105 freeway is absolutely terrible (starting from 6am, although there is a carpool lane which may come in use if you're not traveling alone) for all the commuters headed to the westside of the city. i would give yourself at least an hour and a half to travel from pasadena to LAX during rush hour. 6 am is a pretty safe bet, certainly don't leave after 6:30. good luck!

BRinSM -- You left out the new security checks. Is an hour before a flight early enough to do those? I don't have a clue how involved security is anymore...

maybe tack on an additional 15 minutes then, it can't be that much worse.

Thank you all for the feedback. Based on this, we're changing our plans and staying in downtown LA, if only for half an hour's extra sleep.

(I love this forum! )
