You might try the area called Valley Village, which is not far from Universal City. There are many small live theatres in LA, and I recommend that you start your singing/acting career at one of these... but not sure if they pay a salary... it could be that you are doing this because you love it and to get experience and network.

Even Chino has a community theatre.

"Good", "safe", and "not incredibly expensive" don't go together when talking about LA.

If you want "any sort of job", at least move somewhere that has jobs.

Most everybody that moves to LA from the Heartland wants to be/is a singer and/or actor. They all work at Denny's.

$2K won't last you a month (living alone) in LA. $4K might last you a little longer.

If you are terrified of driving in traffic, go into it heads on, live close to work, or don't move to LA.

Why are you worried about Chino being unsafe? You are a dude, right? What are you afraid of? Y'know, every day, people survive living in Chino without getting harmed.

So since I am a guy, I don't have to worry about getting shot or mugged? I don't know much about Chino, which is why I am asking.

I think my cousin does some acting stuff there at the Chino Theatre.

That's not what I said.

Just know that being a victim of a shooting, mugging (or anything) is very rare. It's not like you need to dodge bullets and robbers all the time.

Chino is a lower-middle class town. You'll be fine.

Chino, itself is pretty safe. There is crime anywhere in the Los Angeles area (of course there is some anywhere period) but it is safer than the Los Angeles basin..As mentioned, the bad part, it is a heck of a long way from the real city and you will be doing a lot of driving on freeways very different from driving on say, highway 40 or 44 or even 35 which is more what you are used to.

Go get a job here: Miceli's Restaurants - Hollywood and Universal City. "L.A.'s Oldest Italian Restaurant" - Home Page
Many people in your situation work there and will give you good connections... that's what LA is all about: who you know. I'd recommend living in Chino but don't rent a 1,500 apartment... look on Craig's List for a room to rent. $500 - $800 would be easy to find but I'd recommend you be careful who you rent from. You can also check out Craig's list in LA area for acting gigs in independent short films. Many people looking for actors... you'll probably have to do a few of those for free to build up your industry network and reputation before getting paid. One more place you must check out: Stats about all US cities - real estate, relocation info, house prices, home value estimator, recent sales, cost of living, crime, race, income, photos, education, maps, weather, houses, schools, neighborhoods, and more.

Enjoy LA! (Don't judge LA by your experience in Chino... not the best place or the best smelling place! )

again, from all that has appeared on this and other threads here, I would think twice about any rentals, rooms or otherwise that appear on Craigslist. The same with anything they advertise when it comes to things like acting gigs, etc...

So right now, with the economy the way it is, would I more than likely not find a job for awhile?

I have spoke with several landlords out in L.A. and about half of them WILL rent to you without a job as long as you pay 3-6 months rent in advance. I recommend doing it this way; Save up around 6000. (trust me even living frugal you will go through it fast out there), live with your cousin and look for work, eat at home, find a job, then secure a place and put 3 months rent down to buy you time to get on your feet and create your budget. That's just my, don't mean it's right by any means. Good luck to you!
