thx again everybody. let me try to address everyone.
1) I will temp. be in a van for a few months but I will have money. Just want to find the right ppl to move in with first.
2) I'm in Ohio right now and it is cold and everybody is lame and theres no ppl. The rocker crowd is exactly what I'm looking for being a muscian and all.
3) I guess I just have this vision of what I want it to be like. I've read alot of books on Morrison. lol. I would like to move there and find ppl who like to explore, be independent, have good times, and are themselves.
4) I was looking at craigslist and there was alot of commune type living. What's the deal with those? Are they usually cool ppl or what?

Also is it legal to drink alcohol on the beaches there? I know fires were outlawed awhile ago but wasn't sure about alcohol.

The hippies might not even want to hang out.

I hate to be blunt but WAKE UP! You are talking about fantasy living, not reality! All for partying, drugs and drinking while living in a van?? Is this really the kind of life you are searching for here? If you were my kid I would strongly advise you to get a job or career that will get you somewhere other than possibly arrested trying to play the cool musician hippie. Drinking on the beach, psychedelics and living like Morrison? You do remember how it ended for him don't you? Please get it together. You sound young enough to still try. I only say this because I don't want to see another young person end up badly here chasing a dream that will turn into a nightmare.

Find an area where you are thinking about going and check out the stats on city-data. You want to live in a safe community first and foremost, especially since you're living out of your van. There are gangs all over the place so you'll need to be careful about who you first come in contact with. And never tell anyone how much money you have, 'cause that might be the last you see of it. And you have also got to be very careful with roommates, who are strangers, 'cause they could also rob you blind. Just know what you're getting yourself into. And it might even be better if you could come out here with one of your buddies.

well the goal of this whole trip is to chase my dream, being music. I do have the credentials to be a dental assistant which I am going to try and do there as well. By the time I'm ready I will have about 10k which I will keep in the bank. If all else fails I can always return home and save up again. I just want to live there and have real good times for about a year and hope something comes my way. And the gangs aren't really a problem, you just gotta know where to stay away from.

If you have $10K I'd rent an apartment - living in a van in LA would be really really tough...

As for the parties and the lifestyle you're looking for, just take a walk in Venice or head to the Sunset Strip and see a show - you'll meet the type of people you're looking for easily. It might not happen your first night in town, but if you go out regularly, you'll find it.

I would like to rent an apartment or share a room with someone but that would drain my bank and I wouldn't have enough funds for food and gas and good times. Venice and Sunset was what I was thinking about as well. Just hit up some bars and find after parties and schit. Thx for the advice man.
