I think the best car for Los Angeles is the new 2010 Volkswagen Golf Diesel made in Germany. It gets over 50 miles per gallon on Diesel. It can be had as either a 3 door or 5 door lift back. It handles well, corners well, is fast, has torque, and the interior is very luxurious almost like a BMW but less busy looking. It has a comfortable quite and sporty ride. The price seems reasonable.
What about for you? What do you think is the best car? Some people prefer other cars like the new mini cooper or a PT cruiser. Some like SUVs. Although I feel that SUVs are a waste out here since they will never go off road and are dangerous in an accident. I've never been too fond of mini vans.
I would like to get that new Diesel Golf but money is tight right now. I like Diesels because they last forever. A lot of old Diesel Mercedes are still on the road these days with their original engine. I have a 1982 M-B 300SD tubo-diesel with nearly 300,000 miles on it and it is still running strong. It just got a new transmission. But the engine is original.
But overall I think that new diesel Golf is perfect. It would be so easy to park in the urban environment. It can hold big cargo in the back if you fold the seat forward. It seems like the most practical car that is available right now. Maybe next year or so I'll get one either new or pre-owned. But I'll never part with my old Mercedes-Benz.

Ford Crown Victoria/Mercury Grand Marquis. Good enough for the police, good enough for me. I routinely get 20 MPG combined. Got 24 MPG on a 5600 mile trip last year.

Very nice! Today I was driving over the green Vincent Thomas Bridge and I saw an 1980s Crown Vic with two middle aged Caucasians sitting up front. Those cars seem to run forever under the right conditions of course.
For my old diesel Mercedes I get anywhere from 20 to 27 mpg. Usually around 23.

I hate to be in one of these things during a collision with another vehicle. You don't see rinky dink little cars like this parked at fire stations (by the employees there - the first responders to car crashes). Drive by a fire station and you see lots of big safe cars and trucks. There's a reason these guys drive big safe cars. One thing that is more important than money is health.
