My boyfriend got a job in Bellflower and I need help in choosing a city to live. I'm unfamiliar with the area. We have a two year old son, and we would like to live in a quiet, safe, and family friendly neighborhood.

Buying or renting?

What is your budget?

Will you be working too?

Do either of you have family in Southern California?

Do both of you drive and have vehicles?

Have both of you commuted before - would you be comfortable driving 30 minutes on a freeway in traffic for example?

Best neighborhood in Bellflower is around Caruthers Park. Still are a few horse properties in that neighborhood, too. You'll want to stay away from anything west of Woodruff for the most part, but things improve somewhat along the Lakewood border on the south side of town(south of Artesia).

Not familiar with housing there but I do know that the best danged "down home" good old fashioned American chicken, taters and pie place I've ever been to was (and hopefully still is) located there. A guy I worked with who grew up in LB turned me on to it when we were spending lots of time in that area for work, a few years back. I can't remember the name of the place for the life of me but it sure was good.

Dont know about chicken, taters, and pie, but Johnny Rebs and Chris'n'Pits are popular restaurants, Wimpy's Sandwiches/Subs are also good(not sure if they're still in business), and Marino's Italian Restaurant has been in business for decades and have nice inexpensive italian food and a pleasant atmosphere

We're looking to keep the rent around $1300-$1500. We both understand L.A. traffic and he doesn't mind commuting to work. I'd preferably like to stay in Orange County rather than L.A.

Default Lakewood Area Better

With children, I would look around Lakewood area East of Woodruff. I would also consider the Cypress/Cerritos/Los Alamitors areas which are in, or border, Orange County.

You would be extremely lucky to get a 2 to 3 bedroom apartment in a nice area for $1300 to $1500, unless you can find a larger family-friendly one with move in specials. Many have these specials which seem to be around that price range which last for 12 months.

That is about the average rent for a 2bd apt in Los Alamitos, which is 10 minutes from Bellflower south on the 605 fwy. At rush hour, it would be faster to take surface partways, and that commute may be 20 minutes.
