Why?

If it wasn't for LAUSD about 75% of the westside would be "family places", if you wanted to raise a family in Southern California (personally I think NorCal's better for raising kids than SoCal, but that's a topic for another thread).

Westchester and Culver City ARE the only westside areas with majority home ownership (whether it be SFRs, condos, or townhouses). Both are predominantly middle class and diverse (so is Mar Vista to the NW of Culver City). Are those your criteria?

Unfortunately Westchester and MV are LAUSD, so they're inherently not "family places", which is a shame (both were at one time - the Mar Vista I went to elementary school and Jr. High school in was).

Obviously Venice is not a "family place" (most of its inhabitants, including its staunchest defenders, would agree that it's not), but when you or others refer to a place as being "family-friendly", what do you mean?
