They're held in LA, because most of these award shows take place during the colder periods of the year, and really, LA is an ideal location for the countless award shows held from January-March. There are some exceptions to this however, as NYC hosts the MTV Video Music Awards in late August-Early September, and DC hosts the Correspondent's Dinner in April, as well as the Kennedy Center Awards in January. BET also hosts the Hip Hop Awards every October in Atlanta, and the BET Honors Award Show is held in DC every February. Other than that, all of the other award shows that are well known are held in LA because the movie, television and music industry to some degree are all located in LA, and all of those celebrities also live primarily in LA.

The oscar nominations at 5 am or 5:30 am west coast time has always struck me as weird.

I'd look at yahoo or google at 10 or 11 that morning, and the nominations are already out. At 5 am? Who's up at that hour? What's the advantage?

Seems like they could do it mid day, maybe 12 or 1 pm. Then entertainment tonight, access hollywood would have something to talk about at 7 or 7:30 that night. Or E! news at 4 pm. Thats the only major news event that I can think of, that happens on a regular basis (yearly) at such an odd hour.

A little off the subject but why do you suppose the 2014 Super Bowl was awarded to New Jersey? Seems that the very reason most winter award shows are held in Los Angeles that the Super Bowl would also be in a warm winter climate like Florida or California. I don't think fans will enjoy sitting outside in February.

In the entertainment business 5 am is considered the end of the evening, while on a working day its considered the first coffee break of the day.

But those probably aren't the reasons for the 5AM PST awards/nominations/presentations.

With every passing moment it becomes 5 am somewhere in the world.
I was just pointing out that the news business which is an integral part of the global entertainment business works 24/7.
Reason...
Breakfast show fodder for the unwashed masses.

While we're on this subject, it bothers me that we don't get the broadcast of "live" shows here until three hours later! I realize it's all about prime time TV, but come on. I shouldn't have to live on the east coast to get a live west coast broadcast!

This has bugged me for sometime, especially the Times Square 'ball drop.' People deride Angelenos lack of NYE interest. Why? Gee, could it have something to do with the fact that the drop happened three hours ago and we are supposed to pretend that it is happening in real time? Who wouldn't get excited about something like that?!?

Even the Laker games are always advertised as starting on EST (even when the games originate HERE at Staples Center). It's bad enough we can't even listen to our Laker announcers on TV, having to instead suffer through an obvious East Coast bias (Jackson, Van Gundy, et al).

And don't even get me started on movie premiers that bypass Hollywood...

My best friend from college is now a big (ok semi-big) producer, and while people would like to think it's because it's easier for all the actors to commute to the show, it's really because of 2 reasons:

1) the warm weather makes production go much smoother

2) it's more cost effective to film in LA over NYC.

Tax credits are available for movie production in NYC now to offset the higher costs & more permits (red tape) in NY, but this has yet to be trended in show productions.

It bothers you that New York celebrates New Year's Eve at midnight local time? Really?
