Hi my partner and I are thinking of moving 2 LA, we are aware of the things you have to do (Visa's etc) My partner line of work is IT and mine is cosmetics. Does anyone have any advice about general cost of living and salaries etc, and where is the best area's to live in. I know this a question often asked but we would appreciate some advice. we understand this is a hard move to make and are not taking the decision lightly and are hoping for some realistic advice.

Someone who has done the move from UK your advice would be greatly appreciated as you have experienced it.

Check out the legal immigration part of the forum for pointers on the visa question.

On the job issue: your chances of finding a job are very slim, especially assuming that you will need to line up jobs first in order to get the visas. I don't know about the cosmetics industry, but certainly the IT job market is tight now. There are vast numbers of unemployed citizens right now, many of them with years of experience and other qualifications, and there's no incentive for a company to hire someone who doesn't already have working papers in order. It's a bad time for anyone to be looking for work in LA, but unless you have extremely in-demand specialized skills it's an even tougher time for someone without a visa to be looking for work in LA.

I wouldn't worry about cost of living and salaries and place to live until you get the visa situation figured out. I would then first find the job, then worry about location. Commutes in LA can be brutal, and your life will be much easier if you can live at least somewhat close to work.
