Thus, not really that I'm young and just want to get out due to weather. Weather's got nothing to do with it - more the people and overall atmosphere feels a lot more welcoming since I'm anything but conservative and I'm a writer. It's where Hollywoodland is and after just two summers it's where I call home. Overall think that it's "livelier," for those in the arts especially, and a lot more accepting & diverse.

I was an intern at Warner Brothers and will most likely return when I return to Cali after graduation in 3 months.

However, I'm of noticeable Malaysian descent and whenever I speak of my truck-trips outside of CA, everyone gives me that "you didn't get attacked?" look.
It's kind of a weird thing, we got those coming to CA in search of more acceptance, while there's those who were raised here(LA area) who are too leery of traveling beyond state borders due to stories from the inflow.

Me? I just had to find out how bad everyone made it out to be in their former parts.

I'm 22... I might be moving out to LA this year depending on if I get this job I'm being considered for.

Right now I'm in an awkward period, I moved back with my parents in upstate NY after living in Brooklyn for two years for school. The employment scene in my "industries" as been getting pretty slim in New York (music/entertainment/media) so I expanded my search to other cities (which it turns out in my industry is really just LA). Prior to that I lived in Manhattan for two years, with most of my summers upstate except in 2009. I wanted to stay in New York and I've always lived in this state so for me applying to this LA job was kind of strange, but I couldn't pass it up because it seemed like a perfect fit. The offices are even in Silverlake & Echo Park, which is apparently where I'm being told I should move by everyone I know.

I guess the things I'm grappling with are that I currently don't have a driver's license or car, and that I will totally hate it. The license can be remedied, I'm actually scheduling my road test soon, and the car will come with time... in the meantime taking the bus doesn't bother me... but I'm worried about the totally hating LA thing. The amount of people in NY I know who have moved out to their company's LA offices for a promotion and have come back with their tail between their legs is staggering. It really is sort of a rivalry between the two cities, at least for New Yorkers. "OH I HATED LA. I HAD TO GO ON BUSINESS THERE LAST WEEK" is a common expression in offices across New York. There are times I gripe about NY but as a whole I loved living there, and I'm worried LA doesn't have that same feel.

I'm broke, but I was broke in New York too, so the high cost of living thing definitely isn't anything I'll have to get used to. With my student loans I'll be in debt for awhile. I've come to terms with it.

I think it is trendy among some circles to hate LA. People love to do that in San Francisco, too.

For what it's worth, we moved to LA from DC. I was afraid I'd hate LA, especially since I don't drive; turned out we absolutely loved it. It's not for everyone, but if you live in a neighborhood you like (that's the mistake I've seen some people make: they move to a neighborhood they hate, then spend their time talking about how much they hate "LA" when really they just hate where they live; LA has enough options for everyone) you should be fine, or at the very least you'll never be bored. NYC and LA are my two favorite cities in the country. It is possible to like them both.

ahhh so good to read this after reading the "does ANYBODY like LA?" thread i found on Google! I found myself getting cold feet after reading that but after reading a few more threads I think I'm game for it. If I hate it, I can always pack up my stuff and drag my heels back across the country for a life of waitressing or folding t-shirts, waiting out the recession in New York. That seems to be the current job for most of my fellow class of '09 BA grads still living in NYC.

Right now my love of Brooklyn is going to have to be secondary to my need to start making money, and LA and NY are pretty much the two cities that provide the most opportunities in what I want to be doing.

also, how would you say meeting people is? i know a handful of people out there from college, but have no great friends living there currently.

I am looking for jobs at the moment and I am fully aware of this being tough, but its the same here in Sweden, so I thought id rather have a poor job combined with a bit of vacation
Anyone have tips on good internet communities for people who want to network and arrange activities?
