Where do you plan to go, and where are you staying? What do you want to see? The LA metro area is HUGE, so if you want help from this board you should be more specific.

If you want an irritatingly technically correct answer, there are no 100% guarantees of your safety anywhere. I guess what you want is a SENSE of safety.

I wouldn't put stock in TV portrayals or anything like that. You realize, of course, that people make TV shows to make money. If they (including the news industry) can dramatize what happens in a locale, they can get more people to watch, and thereby make more money and (they hope) a higher profit.

Sorry, on my soapbox again, but please give us more information.

Anyway......

I agree with mrsltd. That's way too broad a question. Tell us where you're thinking of going, and we can tell you if you should proceed with caution. I kind of doubt you're going to be wandering around a neighborhood where you'd have cause to have real concerns about safety (most tourists don't), so in general if you use common sense you should be fine.

Any of the toursist type stuff is in safe areas. But you need to supply more info, I doubt you plan on taking a tour of South Central.

There's nowhere around Hollywood that I would absolutely "stay away from" for fear of my safety.

But having said that, a lot of what you are looking for is not necessarily right in Hollywood (which is part of the city of Los Angeles).

My own experience with Hollywood is that it is a crowded, quirky place that does not shine with the glitz that popular culture (past and present) has bestowed upon it. Some parts are decent to look at, others are run down. There are a fair amount of homeless there as well, among other things.

There are attractions on Sunset Blvd, but I would go during the weekdays to see them. Friday and Saturday nights are absoultely NUTS there as far as traffic is concerned.

By "homes" I assume you mean the homes of celebrities. I don't know if any even LIVE in Hollywood. If they do, it will be in the hills. Some would probably live in Beverly Hills and Bel Air (zip code 90049 and part of Bev. Hills 90210), or Malibu, among other places.

For shopping you'll be looking at the Beverly Center, 3rd St. Promenade (Santa Monica), and probably Westwood (area around UCLA). There are also dozens and dozens of strip malls and other places to buy things, depending on what you mean by "shopping". I am not an Olympic shopper and since I don't live in the area I am sure I have missed any number of shopping malls in West LA as well (though Fox Hills comes to mind for some reason...it is a little further south, in Culver City where it borders Inglewood).

You should be fine walking and certainly driving around there, though, especially during the day.

Just a quick point, the later in the day or the evening, the more "unsafe" places become. Even the notorious "unsafe places" are relatively safe in the early morning hours ( after daybreak).

Places to stay away from:
North LA
South LA
East LA
West LA

Oh yeah, stay away from all the other suburbs too...

Ok, I lived in LA area for 13 years and so happy I left. Here is a serious list of LA's worst neighborhoods that I know of:
1. South LA
2. Most of Long Beach
3. East LA
4. Compton (Many Gangsta Rappers will disagree with me here)
5. San Bernardino/Riverside (Inland Empire Hellholes)
6. Anaheim/Santa Ana (Going downhill, except Disneyland)
7. All of the LA county suburbs, e.g. Whittier, Torrance, Bellflower, etc (gosh LA sucks)

Places to GO:
1. South Orange County (Snobville/Surburbia)
Laguna Beach, San Juan Capistrano, Irvine, Mission Viejo, etc etc
2. Costa MEsa, NEwport Beach, Huntington Beach
3. San Fernando Valley (Ventura Blvd is good spot)
4. Claremont , Nice college town with trees
5. Palm SPrings
6. Malibu
7. Venice Beach (Carry Bullet Proof Vest, Just in Case, but still good fun)
8. Magic Mountain
9. Marina Del Rey
10. Beverly Hills (Super Duper Snobville)
11. West LA , Brentwood
