I'm stationed at LAAFB and I'm renting. You can rent a decent house in Redondo Beach or Westchester, and live in a good area. This will also put you closer to work, which I think you should consider with the way the traffic is around here. Buying a sort-of-decent home will cost you at least $3,500/month on a 30 year mortgage...not including property taxes.

Of course it's your choice, but if you want my advice I'd recommend sticking close to work. Besides, coastal LA is beautiful and safe with lots to do. If you decide to live in east LA, I would recommend you research the area first to make sure it is not unsafe.

Also consider base housing in San Pedro. I believe the metro runs close by to there and you may be able to work out storage somehow.
