OK, long time Angelenos. Does anybody remember a giant Goodyear tire along side the southbound lane of the 405 just north of LAX? I have just the faintest memory of seeing this back about '68 or '69 on trips through the area with my parents. Did I really see this or is it just a product of my childhood imagination?
Thanks,
Mark

I seem to have a faint memory that maps to this, but nothing definitive. Perhaps it was at the airfield that houses the Goodyear blimp off the 405 in Carson.

Spyker6 -
It sounds like you're remembering the giant doughnut that sits atop Randy's Donuts located at Manchester and La Cienega in Inglewood. It is clearly visible from the 405 at Manchester and is considered somewhat of an L.A. landmark. It has appeared in many commercials and ads about L.A.

That's the first image that hit my head too, The Big Donut.

While we're all having 1970s flashbacks, I vaguely remember a giant statue of a man holding automobile tires. One of two places: One Sherman Way in Van Nuys or on the west side of the 405 (near a golf course???) not too far from the Goodyear Blimp landing facility.

Maybe we were all too busy drinking this off the 101 in downtown

.

This one is still there, though not holding tires. It's the Dominguez Par 3 golf course.
