My wife and I are moving to LA where I'll be working in the Westwood area. We plan to rent a house at first and maybe purchase if we find an area we like. What affordable ($2500/month or less) residential neighborhoods are near Westwood? We'd like to find a rental house with a yard for our dog (apartments won't work). We don't want to spend all day in the car and we hear the commute from the SF Valley is a killer. We aren't familiar with the LA area but we are looking for a reasonable combination of relatively affordable rent/nice neighborhood/quick commute. Thanks for any insight.

Renting a decent home on the Westside at that price point is challenging even in today's market. I'd check out rentals in Culver City, Mar Vista & Palms. Head on over to westsiderentals.com & peruse their listings just to get an idea.

if you need a house, you'll either need to look into a sketchier, more immigrant heavy neighborhood or head to the valley.
