Lol....No,that is not what I meant.
Its just that whenever I say I am an Indian, they assume the other Indians-native americans.
So,on two instances when I went to visit my uncle in North Carolina I had folks question my ethnicity and when I told them I was from india, they had a puzzled reaction.Turned out they did not know there is a country called India which lies in the continent of Asia but now they do.
Very sad.

No wonder we're losing jobs to you guys.

I was going to say something similar, but I didn't want to offend any North Carolinians.

In the meantime, enjoy this video:

My question is-How much of an influence does Hollywood hold for you guys?
You must be used to seeing great directors ordering a pizza or the latest starlet walking the sideways and I can understand this is a nuisance-The wrong side of fame, but there is the "feel" of living right there isnt it?
Seeing the shooting locales and actually living over it.....What is it like visiting chinatown and getting a shave right where J J Gittes got one,or walking the steps of the Bradbury building stalking and weary like Deckard,or experiencing the quirky street vibe on the streets of LA like in Strange days
The charm of the theatre and popcorn....Living and actually doing what you love...Whats it like

Despite my outwardly lack of interest of all things Hollywood, I do feel a little giddy inside when I see someone famous. Or visit somewhere famous.

Outside my apartment window I can see the Griffith Observatory, and when I walk around I can see the Ennis House (featured in Blade Runner). I see film crews all of the time and one time had my apartment complex taken over by them. (which was a pain).

Brad Pitt was seen in my neighborhood just recently, and I have run in or bumped shoulders with many other TV, movie stars and musicians.

But I didn't move here for all of that, and for every movie star I might see, I see hundreds of hard working people trying to make a living. I see tons of homeless, and blight just next door.

Hollywood is a dreamworld and Los Angeles is too big to be defined by Hollywood, but you do have one thing right: happiness isn't in Hollywood, it's in doing something that you love.

Well... it is kind of cool when you realize that a lot of Los Angeles has been featured in a movie at one point or another for the world to see. Even the small things. But, I'll be the first to tell you that Hollywood is only a part of the city, and not the whole. Los Angeles is so big that you have a city of many cultures that comprise the whole; Hollywood is there but it isn't the absolute. A lot of people here are just ordinary individuals just trying to survive. But nonetheless it's definitely good to have the vibe here so we can experience that.

The next best step would be to vist and experience it for yourself.

Rishi85: First of all, very impressed with you knowledge of City of LA references in Hollywood films. Second, you are CORRECT to qualify you are from the Indian sub-continent, as MANY Americans are CLUELESS about world geography.

Agreed that movies are a mere shadow or mirage or real life....yet you do occasionally run into actors/muscians around town. Having grown up in LA, here is a partial list of people I have seen and where I saw them:

Eric Clapton at a restaurant in Sherman Oaks.
Drew Barrymore at a coffee house on La Brea Ave.
George Clooney two times: a bar in West Hollywod and a bar in Studio City.
Tom Selleck driving past a pro-choice demonstration in Beverly Hills.
Barbara Eden (Yes, Jeanie) at LAX.
Jason Alexander (from Senfeild) at a pool hall in Santa Monica.
Russell Johnson (the Prof. in Gilligan's Island) at the grocery store.
Eve Plumb (Jan Brady on Brady Bunch) at a public meeting for LA's red line subway project.

But my favorite moment of all was in 1990 when I saw then Mayor of Los Angeles, Tom Bradley introduce Nelson Mandella for a speech he gave on the steps of LA City Hall less than a year after he was released from 27 years of being in prison.........

Growing up in LA, I never really cared about celebrities AT ALL. In fact, I don't know about the rest of you, but I really wanted them to go away. Every time I see a celebrity in person, they are usually surrounded by paparazzi, fans, and police escorts. If not, they are usually non-descript but tend to be a bit on the arrogant side.

However, I have the cultural aptitude of a 50 year old African man. Ironically, I never kept up with pop culture. I just didn't care that much, and I grew up there!

Here's the mistake that people from outside LA tend to make; Entertainment is the only business in town. In fact, manufacturing is way more important with the blue collar worker being on the vanguard of everyday LA life. The ports, the old aerospace firms (now extinct), the refineries, and the factories are the reason why LA is where it is today in addition to entertainment.

For most people who live in LA, celebrity life isn't even relevant. Survival is. However, the great part about LA is that its a big place with relatively mild weather year round. That's what makes the experience more enjoyable. I loved growing up in LA, and look forward to going back. However, what a bunch of celebrities do isn't the reason why.

I'd like to echo a couple sentiments shared here:
-It can be neat to see places in person that have been on Tv/movies-especially when that place is supposed to be in another city etc
- You'd have to spend a lot of time here in person to get a true gauge for the area. Even the shows/movies/documentaries that do a good job showcasing the city accurately are insufficient for a viewer who's never been here.

As for celebs, merely seeing them does nothing for me. But, it IS cool when I'm out in a social setting and actually end up hanging out around or with them. For example, I was once out with a couple friends for happy hour and one of our friends from our beach sports leagues joined us with a friend/date. Her name was Vanessa and she was hot. Turns out her last name is Minnilo and now she's pretty well-known for dating Nick Lachey and being on TV. There was also a time when we were out in Hermosa Beach at Sharkeez and Tara Reid and her sister just joined us at our booth (was crowded and nowhere else to sit) and we ended up partying all day/night with them. Had we merely "seen" either of them and said "hi" it would have been pretty stupid. And that's probably how it would have been had we seen them anywhere other than L.A.

it's kind of interesting when you're driving down the street and can say "hey, i remember that ______(insert restaurant, shop, building, etc...) from that one movie," but you get used to it quickly after living here for a while. la is pretty normal city in that it is filled with millions of normal people doing their jobs to support whatever lifestyle they so choose. it really isn't normal for celebrities to be walking down the street or dining in restaurants where the public can easily notice them. on occasion you'll see B or C list stars around town, but the real famous people have appointments for their whole day and can't be out randomly walking around due the amount of paparazzi that follow them.
