I will be relocating to the Los Angeles area in a few months for work. I will be working in Redondo Beach, and thinking about living in Hermosa Beach. I am a wheelchair user, and will be renting an apartment, so my questions are:
How accessible is this area?
Will it be difficult to find an accessible apartment?
How are the sidewalks?
Is it very hilly?
Do public buildings have a lot of steps?
Are there any accessible beach paths?

As well as any other useful information... thanks!

In general, most part of the beach(es) are wheelchair accessible. You just need to know where the accessible entrances are. There are designated parking for wheelchair user.
Finding an apartment that is wheelchair accessible is not impossible but it certainly needs a bit work. Hermosa is a great place to live, but at the same time it doesn't have as much large complex that well designed and catered to today's ADA standard. You may be better off finding apartment in Redondo. If you are open to renting a condo or single family (1 level) that could be an option as well.
The beach could be hilly, so please be careful of where you are heading.
Public building wise, not sure what are you referring to, is it shopping? government buildings? But for the most part, they are wheelchair accessible or at least they retrofit some path way.
Beach paths, yes, again you just need to know where is the closest path to each of the beach. For example, Hermosa Beach does make it easy for wheelchairs. The beach is very accessible. If you go to Pier Ave, you should be able to find a designated parking and can get to the beach from there. Manhattan Beach would be a little tricky, but you can get to the beach along the strand too.

I hope this help.

On those beaches are beach wheelchairs, I think they're in these white boxes near the strand and marked as such; you can find out how to use them here:

Manhattan Beach is super hilly as soon as you get away from the beach. And I mean STEEP. Hermosa and Redondo are so-so, depending on where you are exactly. All beaches are accessible through beach access paths and the famous L.A. bike & walking paths that run right along the sand. So you can get the beach experience without much of a hassle.

Accessible housing can be a problem in the area in general as many of the buildings are older, from the 60's, 70's, 80's. Not impossible, though. You might also consider Torrance for more accessible choices. Good luck!

I used to work for Center Disability Access. If you ever encounter a business that doesn't comply with the ADA laws, give them a call. PM me if you can't find the number.

We have a friend who lives in Redondo who uses a wheelchair. He lives in the apartments overlooking the marina. I'll see if I can find the name of the complex and post it for you.

Here's a listing for an accessible building in RB.

Welcome to the neighborhood!

They're simply known as "the Apartments at King Harbor".

Good luck!

Thanks for all the info everyone, it is very helpful! luckily i will be able to live out there in temporary housing for a month so i can check out some of the places in person. You were right on the money, SouthBayStuff, a lot of the apartments that I've come across in the area seem to be privately owned and older, which definitely makes finding an accessible place more difficult!

Default Relocating to Redondo Beach

Hello!

My boyfriend is a wheel chair user. He and I are relocating to Redondo Beach this summer from Michigan. We are looking for affordable wheel chair accessible housing. We would appreciate any help you could share from your own experience finding housing. Thank you!
