When I was a kid growing up in Port Hueneme many of us had chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits. We had them all. Also had a vegetable garden in the back yard and just about everyone had fruit trees. We had peaches. Everyone would make it a point to trade fruit. We were one of 2 homes that had peaches. Other homes had Orange, Tangerine, Lemon, Avocado, and Plum. I don't remember as a kid my parents ever buying eggs or chicken for that matter from the supermarket. As kids we knew where chickens came from and eggs. Breakfast was in the back yard. The ducks had another purpose besides food. Many of them ended up at the lake and would turn into targets, before becoming food, if we were lucky. Those days are long gone. I can't imagine anyone having Chickens now. Santa Monica is an interesting place though. Maybe there it is OK.

Post Backyard Chickens

Google the Santa Monica Municipal Code and search "animals". You will find that it is legal to have chickens in the backyard of residential neighborhoods of Santa Monica...but only up to 13 chickens (or fowl) is allowed...more than that and you have to get a special permit by the humane shelter office.
