Is the job market recovering in LA (digital media)? I am torn out between LA and NY... and possibly DC (Though most jobs in DC are Gov. and require either citizenship/residency, which I dont have).

I don't know about the digital media field in particular, but keep in mind that "recovering" still means a long way to go. How about initially applying to jobs in all three cities from wherever you're living now and see what happens?

Good call U.U. Yeah Skip that's what I have been doing... applying in Chi and LA. I am in/from Chicago, I have years of experience producing video/film/tv back here at home... but with plans to move to LA and focus strictly on studio movies. Naturally, I expect to be at the bottom of the totem pole when it does happen. Exhaust all your options... because in this economy it cannot hurt.

Also to anyone out there with more advice... I haven't checked in in a while, but I would love any news/tips on what's brewing/suffering/movin-and-shaking in the movie industry.

I am not in the entertainment industry but this link to the local economic development agency (www.laedc.org) provides a brief summary of their forecast for the entertainment/film industry in 2010:

http://www.laedc.org/newsroom/releas...nmentStudy.pdf

They forecast a "modest" increase in employment in 2010....

Nice, this is exactly the type of literature I usually look for. Thanks much, really!

I would pick L.A. over NYC any day.
The huge skyscrapers are fun to look at but that's it....it is pretty ugly and cold. LA has skyscrapers too.

And I don't know about you, but when I visited NYC, half the time I felt like I was in a sardine can.

(from another forum i posted on months ago... think i'd have better feedback here)

I just finished reading Mailroom, by David Rensin. It was a great read, and a really interesting set of stories told by mostly agents, some producers who started their careers in agency mailrooms. When i got into production 10 years ago (chicago) I liked the madness, pressure and insane duties of a bottom-of-the-ladder production assistant in the business... earning my keep. I know that game... now, kind of a two part question here....

1) What is the agency mailroom system like in LA these days.... does it even exist in the same way, is it still the "boot camp" that i read about in Rensins book?

2) I have always been and wanted to excel as a producer, have never had a desire to be an agent. Is getting in at a talent agency and battling through the ranks a good way to open doors/find opportunities as a film producer? Either way, I look forward to getting my balls busted and doing whatever is necessary to prove my worth to the LA industry... after all that is how i learned in chicago. look forward to feeback on this, and to hearing from anyone else who has read "Mailroom"

And in case anyone was going to mention... yes, I enjoyed 'swimming with sharks'... I can relate
