I will be travellling to LA on business soon and I am responsible for renting a low cost art studio while I'm there. I've found a few studios that have what I'm looking for at the price I need but I am a bit unfamiliar with LA areas. I will only be working there during the day and clients will be coming in during daylight (9am-6PM) the week I'm there. I need to be in an area that is safe for women walking/parking alone outside and where the cars parked will be relatively safe too. Also, we will be hauling equipment and bags up and down the elevators so that's another reason that safety is a concern.

Please tell me what you think about these inersections/areas during weekday daylight hours. They are my top choices due to availability/rates for the projects I have:

Little Tokyo - Studio space on Traction Ave between e3rd &e4th street
Melrose Ave - between N Fairfax and N Gardner

I'm comfortable with urban areas, but I just don't want to get stuck in a gang infested pocket where police are afraid to go being that we will have women travelling alone to visit the work space and I know nothing about these 2 locations. Thanks for any help!

-L

PS I forgot to mention: please don't tell me to drive by and look at them. I am flying cross country and am required to book the space well in advance and cannot travel to LA prior to the date I will be needing the space.

Ditto: both very safe, esp. during daylight.

One might argue Melrose is the "safer" location....but you'd be fine with either.

Welcome to LA!

Melrose is peachy. Should not be a problem.

Little Tokyo is in a state of renewal and downtown is modernizing by leaps and bounds. You will want to walk around Little Tokyo

I would have no problem in daytime in either place as a woman alone.
Are they both the same price?

Parking is always an issue here so a thorough looksee would be a good idea. Traffic is equally an issue.

If you have to have people come to you, then I might ask my customers if they would be willing to go downtown. If they live on The West Side they are unlikely to go downtown.

Hope this helps.

no problems in either. my only gripe with the arts district is sometimes how abandoned it feels, particularly the further east you go.
