So my husband and I are moving from Washington State (we just moved from Australia and its not working out here). I'm a teacher and there is just more work available in California.

I've never been to L.A (planning a scouting trip in the next few weeks) but my husband has. I'm just wondering what you guys think are the best affordable neighbourhoods.

I don't want to live somewhere I don't feel safe, and I don't want to live in an apartment. We have dogs, so we'd need a house with a fenced in yard. I'd like to be within a half an hour/40 minute drive to the beach if possible, but i'd definitely compromise on this if the neighbourhood was right.

I think we'd probably be happy to pay up to 2000 a month in rent, maybe even 2100 if the house/neighbourhood was perfect. I like the look of West Hollywood and places like Beverly Hills and Santa Monica, but its my understanding that those areas are far more affluent and we'd be hard pressed renting an apartment there in our price range....

thoughts/comments/suggestions?

P.S it would be an added bonus if we could live somewhere close to an offleash dog park, good (yet affordable) restaurants and a variety of gym options, as my husband and I both teach aerobics on the side.

I've applied for jobs all over L.A - In the city, in Hollywood, all the way down to Laguna Beach. I know that the location of my work will actually influence where we live, but I guess at this point I'm just narrowing down a list of potential areas that we could start researching as places to live.

Home rental with a yard for $2,000 or less is going to offer severely limited options. My first instinct is to recommend interior parts of Huntington Beach or Fountain Valley.

well you definitely don't want to move to west hollywood then end up with a job in laguna. having said that, you should have a job before you move. also, being a teacher is difficult right now, many teachers were laid off recently and many school districts are on hiring freezes right now. good luck though!

That doesn't sound very promising.

Apart from Craigslist, can anyone recommend any good websites to find rentals?

Los Angeles Apartments, Orange County Apartments, and San Diego Apartments

You may want to look at Torrance too.

Thanks for the advice. Not planning to move until I've secured a job.

I've applied for a whole stack of job openings with private and independent schools. I understand what you mean about the hiring freezes, but there are some districts in the public system that are actually hiring (surprisingly), which is more than I can say for Washington.

There is zippo up here.

Realizing this is still craigslist, the interface is much more helpful:
