I currently live in San Diego and have made a few brief trips up to LA. I am considering moving up there before too long. I was hoping to get advice from people who currently live in LA or who have lived there. I don't want advice from people who have not lived there. I want an inside perspective from people who really know Los Angeles. What are some things I should know about LA before moving there both good and bad? Any advice from locals would be much appreciated.

Los Angeles is east of Reno.
There is no transition from southbound 5 to westbound 134.
Jiggs McDonald preceded Bob Miller as the voice of the Los Angeles Kings.

OK, so what do you need to know?
Do you have a job? Where? Doing what?
Married? Kids? Ages?
Why do you want to move to LA?

Charles you are such a jokester........I take it you used to live in LA before moving to good ol Huntsville Alabama?

No job lined up at the current moment. I am currently working and living in San Diego. Not married, no kids and I am considering a move because I am bored with SD and am hoping the job market is a little better up north.

The unemployment rate is currently HIGHER in Los Angeles County (12.3%) than San Diego County (11.0%).

Of course, LA has a more "diverse" economy than San Diego....

One key to living a good quality of life in LA is ensuring your job is relatively close to where you live. So keep that in mind.

When those freeways were constructed, I'm pretty sure the belief was that there wouldn't be enough traffic in either direction to justify ramp transitions between them. They intersect at a very sharp angle. It would have taken a lot of engineering, time, and money to do it.

Still not enough information. What are you qualified to do. What kind of a budget are you on? Do you have money saved up for the trip and if so how much? What's your ethnicity? Do you have a car? What kind of people do you want to live around? Do you want to live in the downtown area of a city or do you prefer suburbia?

The more detailed you get the more detailed we can get with our answers.

I currently work in video production and also do some internet marketing. I would like to find housing under $1000. Male Caucasian 28. Car yes. I don't really care about the kind of people I live around. Isn't that one of the pluses about LA is its diversity? I would probably like to live closer to downtown....Hollywood area.

A few things

LA is not as unsafe as its 80/90s reputation - seems like a lot of folks have images of the LA riots from the 80s, gangsta rap, etc. But still, watch your back and be careful, and you should be alright.

Fish tacos are better in SD.

Traffic sucks. No, traffic sucks more than you think. It wears on you after a while.

USC = those who had the money to get into an Ivy League, but didn't have the brains to get into an Ivy League

UCLA = university of caucasians lost amongst asians

LACMA is one of the city's best kept secrets. But if you aren't much of an art guy, then it probably doesn't mean a whole lot to you.

Ed Hardy clothing = you're either a tourist, or Persian (aka guidos of the west coast)

LA is less black than you realize. South Central is mostly Hispanic now.

"Koreatown" is actually majority Hispanic.

West Hollywood is full of Russians.

Without the Persians, Armenians, and Jews, Caucasians are a minority in LA.

Your favorite porn stars hang out at Sardo's in Burbank on Tues nights for karaoke.

Pink's is overrated.

Learn the shortcut surface streets to avoid freeway traffic.
