Yes, the West has a very different mindset on this. There is no acceptance of that blue blood mentality in most professions(lawyers are the exception, but they're in their own little bubble anyways). Stanford and Caltech rank right up there with Harvard and MIT, but other than giving you a potential leg up when competing with them, you aren't going to be blackballed because you went somewhere "lesser"(though in reality Berkeley is probably the most prestigious by name out west, but prestige and quality are different things).

Well that is certainly encouraging.

It is a great city- expensive though. If you could stay with family whilst you job hunt that would be great-the architecture here is amazing - well we love all the 60's stuff so we constantly drive about in awe at some places. Good luckand sometimes luck has little to do with it- anything is possible but do not take on a tenancy without a job. I really believe that if you have the right attitude and some sort of income to get your basic needs met,you can create a great life in most places in the western world. We moved here last year from london and we totally love it despite the expense of life here.

I've already been forwarned about the cost from my family. But I would be coming from the northeast. A studio apartment in Boston is $1500/month. Not including taxes and other CoL.

Is LA comparable to London, which from personal experience, is ridiculously expensive (expecially when the pound was $2, back in '07)?

Or was it an easy transition?
