Still couldn't afford anything in LA, though, so we moved to Austin, TX. Oh my god, the HEAT! And just couldn't reconcile myself to living in Texas... and even the coolness of Austin didn't make up for it. I got pregnant so we decided to move "back home" to Boston last November to be closer to my family. The winter just about killed us PLUS pretty much everything Island_OnThe_Land said. Add to that: the driving is hellish. Driving in LA is heaven compared to Boston, believe it or not! The people are miserable, and my husband pointed out that everywhere we look... someone is limping. Seriously. We call it "broken foot syndrome." And, for the first time in my life... my joints hurt. I don't know if it's coincidence, result of my pregnancy or getting older, but it started as soon as we moved here. I don't move as much here because it's always so crappy out and it's easier just to stay inside.

We hate it here.

So, after our nationwide tour, we're moving back to LA this summer/fall. I can't wait! It's the only place I've lived that I've ever been happy about. I miss my friends. I miss palm trees. I miss the fantastic weather. And, given the choice between east coast rudeness and west coast phoniness... I'll take the phoniness. It doesn't **** me off as much as rudeness, and I can laugh at it.
One person's hell is another person's paradise.

I freelance, so I can work anywhere, and my husband might be writing for a show in LA. We're actually looking to buy in North Hollywood/Pasadena/Highland Park. Wherever the heck we can afford. Which isn't a whole lot.

I moved out and came back in the '90s, and then moved out about 2 years ago and want to come back again.

If not for the job situation I'd be back already. I suspect many other "natives" would be back, too. The RE bubble followed by the economic crisis drove a large number of people out.

I am not from California but I stumbled across this thread and really enjoyed what people had to say. I live in Arizona right now and there are a lot of Californians living here. It seems to me that the Californians that live outside of the state seem to give California a bad name. I haven't met one person living outside of California that says something good about it. I have been to California on vacation many times and loved it. The diversity, the climate, the people, everything! I guess it is one thing to live there and another to take a weekend trip. What is your take on this? Did you experience the same thing when living out of California?

^^ No, I really miss LA after living in Vegas for 2 years. I think it's expected that those no longer living in LA would not like LA. Otherwise, they'd still be in LA. Same logic goes for the state as a whole. You'll probably find a disproportionate amount of people in Arizona that won't like California just because those who don't like California will try to move out.

On the flip side, a lot of our friends in Vegas escaped LA because things were too expensive there. Other than for this reason, they all want to move back badly.

While living in other states the only thing people envied about CA was the weather. Not impressed with anything else about it especially since outside of CA. most people don't care about the entertainment business, actors and gossip. Ca. was viewed as a flaky state with blonds and flip flops. Most had never been to Ca and usually just related to San Diego as a possible destination. I missed it after awhile and eventually moved back but found it had more to do with familiarity than L.A. itself.

I almost feel like Phoenix is in the same phase right now that L.A. was in back in the 40s and 50s, big city that is still considered small but growing rapidly, nice weather, and cheap housing. If this keeps up by 2050 Pheonix could become very expensive, overrun by too many people and unlivable.

Yeah, that's possible that'll happen to Phoenix as well in 2050 considering you have Flagstaff and Tucson as neighboring cities... of course if the world doesn't end in 2012 . I think what LA and the rest of SoCal has against us is we're limited by geography and therefore, weather. I can be wrong, but from my observations, a majority of people like the coastal Mediterranean weather. This explains the sky high prices in the western part of SoCal. There really isn't any room for expansion LA without spilling over to the heat in places like Palmdale. I can't imagine it expanding anymore though. I'm not looking forward to the commute when I move back.

To say the only nice thing about California is the weather is simply ignoring the facts.

Yosemite National Park
Sequoia National Park
Mammoth Mountain
Lake Tahoe
Joshua Tree National Monument
Big Sur
Carmel/Monterey
Santa Barbara
La Jolla
Santa Monica Mountains Ntl Recreation Area
The Redwood Forest
Death Valley

......the list goes on....

I like to add theme parks and beaches that most people really like that other states lack...

Disneyland
Universal Studios
Knotts Berry Farm
Six Flags
Raging Waters and several other water parks
Sea World
Zoos

There are several beaches for everyone, whether they like to people watch in Venice and Huntington to the peaceful Malibu and Carmel. We also have sandy beaches and rocky beaches.
