I'm coming to LA for a month in June/July and would like to go to a concert or 2. (Jack Johnson style of music preferable). Are there any good clubs or so that you can reccomend where I can look up their calendars for some nice music?
Any other tips of what I shouldnt miss would be appreciated too.

Most places have certain nights for certain styles of music...

Here is a list of places with live music that I can think of. You'd have to check their calendars like you said.

open mic places/cafe shows???:
The Equator Cafe
Priscilla's Gourmet Coffee
Highland Grounds
Genghis Cohen
The Gig
The Green Room - Hollywood
Canter's (Deli) Kibbitz Room
The Vermont
Hallenbeck's General Store
Kulak's Woodshed
14 Below
Un-Urban Coffee House
Largo
REMO Recreational Music Center
Amsterdam Café
Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf - (encino soapbox sessions?)
Dakota Music Lounge

try these venues also:
Silverlake Lounge
The Mint
The Echo
Echoplex
The Viper Room
Club Spaceland
Whiskey A Go Go
Troubadour
Roxy Theatre
Knitting Factory
Pehrspace
The El Ray Theatre
Wiltern Theatre
Redwood Bar and Grill
House of Blues - LA

If you want "campy," then be sure to go to Kulak's Woodshed... it's a real treat.

Stay far away from the Wiltern... ugh... if you must stand the whole night, the House of Blues on Sunset is a much better atmosphere... and if you to go Disneyland, there is another House of Blues in downtown Disney that's really nice.

For bigger venues, check out the Hollywood Bowl and the Greek Theatre... these are beautiful outdoor venues and on some nights the HB has a fireworks show and the sound systems at these places is awesome. I haven't been there, but I've heard the Nokia Theatre is really nice in downtown LA.
