Any further posts that are solely about illegal immigration will be deleted. Please remember that all illegal immigration issues, projections for the future, etc. belong in the immigration forum. Thank you.

It amazes me how easily people are baited into bash LA threads like this one. Some random, anonymous poster, from God knows where and for all we know has never even been to LA, creates a thread predicting that LA will be destroyed by an earthquake (a century's old cliche) and then the OP disappears from site. I mean does one really think this person was genuinely interested in a substantive and serious conversation about LA's future?

We loved living in Ventura County and were very sad to have to move after retirement. LA and its environs will become a place for the extremely wealthy and the very poor. Water supplies could diminish for various reasons. Schools will continue to be on the short end of the stick, mostly because of Proposition 13. Infrastructure will continue to deteriorate, as voters keep turning down initiatives to raise taxes for road improvements. That's why CA has such high car registration fees. You could deduct some of it if it were a tax, but oh no, they'd rather pay a fee and be unable to deduct that.

We miss the weather, the beaches, our house and friends but not the trouble we see ahead for our beloved ex-state.

On your Federal Schedule A, you may deduct the California motor vehicle license fee listed on your Vehicle Registration Billing Notice from the Department of Motor Vehicles. The other fees listed on your billing notice such as registration fee, weight fee, and air quality fee are not deductible. (California law is the same as federal law regarding the deduction allowed. Therefore, if you itemized your deductions on your federal return and claimed a deduction for the vehicle license fee, no adjustment to your California return is needed on schedule CA.)

the acheivement in 230 years is remarkable. those things call weather, beaches, hollywood, land scape, palm trees are something else. los angeles will be the biggest city in america and for sure have a lot of skycrapers in the size of 7 story buildings to 20 story buildings hollywood will be filled with skycrapers of that size I have just described. olympic blv will be equaly filled with skycrapers just like wilshire blv now. more free ways and more cars obviously more people. there will be motros everywhere in the city. there will be a football team in los angeles. los angeles will be the sport capital of the 21st century. and downtown LA will has transformed itself into another mahattan. opra free would have moved to hollywood from chicago. Los angeles will become the destination of choice in america and the dream land for a lot of people. more so than any city in america. the only stoping this from happening may be a devastating earthquak. other than that I do not see how it will not happen. the potential of LA is enormous.

I agree with the posters stating that L.A has a lot of potential...but sadly I see that potential being squandered by a lack of pride/care by residents and a lack of leadership on the part of city officials. While there are a lot of rich people that live here, we are not doing great economically along with the rest of CA.

Don't buy into the myth that everyone is doing equally as bad right now . There are places that are actually doing well right here in America.

Our unemployment rate is 10.3%

Look at this list Unemployment Rates for Metropolitan Areas

#321 Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area 10.3%

I think in the future L.A will be full of more rich people, I see L.A becoming much more dense that it is now too.

True, but cities with unemployment rates within one point or exceeding that of LA include: Atlanta, Chicago, Memphis, New York, El Paso, Providence, Detroit, Greensboro and Las Vegas. Philly, Cleveland, Jacksonville and San Jose are within 1.5. And that margin is largely attributed to the regionally specific effects of the departure of defense contracting, Enron, and the bursting of the tech & housing bubbles. With a few notable exceptions like Houston, unemployment is most acutely affecting large cities. I agree there’s more desperation out there than what‘s commonly portrayed, but I also believe our problems and our fates across the country are more interdependent than we often realize.

About all the skyscrapers and growth: what about that limiting factor, oil? Is anyone familiar with the idea of Peak Oil? If oil is in short supply or too expensive, how will all these skyscrapers be built, and why would they be built? Without oil, or with expensive oil, how will some new miracle economy happen?
I am not 100% sure I believe in Peak Oil, but don't you think it is something to consider when planning future growth, or lack of it.
