I always loved crossing the I-10 bridge in Lake Charles when I was a kid on my way from Houston to Crowley and back. But man, that span is showing its age. Does anyone know when they plan to replace it?

Also, when they do replace it, what will they do with all that fantastic railing with the interlocked upside down pistols? I'd love to have a few sections of it for my backyard fence in the house I'm going to have in Lafayette one day. I guess I'll have to email LaDOT.

Thanks,
Scott

Well, I emailed the LaDoT about the guardrails. It doesn't look like I'll be getting my hot little hands on them. At least the folks in Calcasieu Parish have vision enough to preserve them and keep them in Louisiana.

From LaDot: "According to our area engineer over Calcasieu Parish, this is a question for your local state representatives, as there has been a great deal of local interest in these handrail decorations. At this point, no plan of disposal has been developed, though an auction has been suggested."

They should preserve them and use them either on the new bridge or somewhere else in Lake Charles.

To answer your question, I'm not sure when exactly the bridge will be replaced, but I do know that plans are in the works. It won't be as high (which is a good thing in my opinion), but I'm sure the span will be just as long. They will build it up to interstate standards, unlike the current one.

Crossing that bridge was the highlight of my childhood family visits to Crowley. I just wanted a little piece of it, if possible. I'm glad to know that some local preservationists are going to look after it. I was afraid it would have all gone on the scrap heap.

In July, I emailed Congressman Boustany's office about the bridge. Someone from his office called me back a few days later and gave me a number of someone to call in the Calcasieu Parish DoT. I never called because I figured it would be too much of a hassle to arrange a section or two from China. Since I plan to move to La in less than two years, and now after reading this article, I think I can take care of it then.
