Hi,

My husband is being relocated for work to Louisiana, and I am hoping to get into Tulane. We are both coming from very safe Southern California, and I am very concerned with moving to Louisiana - especially New Orleans. Can anyone recommend any safe cities around New Orleans or areas of New Orleans that are safe? We are not at all familiar with Louisiana, and would like any advice anyone can offer.

Thank you so much!

You might want to look in areas of Jefferson Parish. We lived in River Ridge and felt pretty safe there. There are nice homes and a lot of trees. I would avoid Orleans Parish although there are nice areas, I don't think any of them are as "safe" as you want. The north shore of Lake Pontchartrain is very nice and relatively safe, but it will be a drive to the city. The cities of Mandeville and Covington on the north shore are nice. The bottom line is New Orleans is a city with good "streets" and bad "streets", not neighborhoods per se. Do a lot of research before you commit and the best thing to do is to go visit and see which areas you like and feel comfortable in. Good luck and be safe.

Spot on. You really do have to research if you live in New Orleans it really is street to street. I would avoid New Orleans parish as well. -not a great place to be before the storm and probably much worse after (except maybe Uptown, but that is a whole other world). Personally if you can take the drive the best place is the northshore (Mandeville, Covington, Madisonville). I would say those are the safest
