Fleeing Louisiana -- will Gulf State residents start relocating away from the Gulf in mass? (New Orleans: unemployment, live in)

While contemplating the economic effects of BP's oil spill, I began to wonder whether the destruction of the economies of the Gulf states will result in a mass exodus of people to other states.

If you live in one of the Gulf states have you noticed or heard about an exodus of people? Are hundreds of thousands of people expected to relocate to other states? What states might they fleet to, Texas?

I don't know, but I'm moving TO New Orleans, not away from it! Great timing, huh? lol

1. No, I haven't heard of anyone relocating because of the spill, let alone hundreds of thousands.

2. Texas is a gulf state.

I would think that the people most affected by this wouldn't have many places to go. Most of these people's way of life revolves around Gulf fishing/oil field work/etc. Moving to another state would require the learning of skill sets that could also be put to use in other areas of Louisiana. Like Dakota1776 said, Texas is a gulf state.

I sure hope not, I just replanted my garden yesterday.

We live off the land and sea here and we will come back even stronger when its all said and done.

Except for maybe Tx or Ok temporarily, there's really nowhere to go. Retrain-for what? I don't see anything that promising at present. With the US at record high unemployment, I don't see anywhere better, do you?

I just want to say I live in Michigan and have been watching all the news coverage of the oil spill. I'm sickened by the whole thing and keep thinking of how I'd feel if something like this happened to our Great Lakes. There is a lot of fishing up here but nothing like what you have in the Gulf. I'm just very sorry for all the suffering in your area and loss of jobs due to this disaster.

I grew up hunting and fishing in the marshes, swamps prairies and delta woodlands and I'm fairly mad.

Everyone keeps blaming the government. Last I checked oil companies drill oil wells.

Thing is, anywhere else in the world two blow out preventors would have been required. A redundant backup... so to speak. Heck, our Cannuck neighbors to the north drill a relief well ahead of time. Snow must make you smart.

I wonder why the USA doesn't require two blow out preventors? It wasn't Greenpeace, is my guess.

People keep talking about jobs will be lost due to a moratorium. How about ya get a job that doesn't chit on the gulf. The world will still turn if yuppies don't have Beamers.

When I read about no second blow out preventor then no advance relief well it's pretty easy to see how this was eventually going to happen. On top of that is a company bragging they can handle something even worse than this when in reality they can't handle anything except I guess counting their money. T Boone Pickens says no matter what BP tells people they won't have that relief well ready until mid-September...not August. This whole thing is just appalling.
