all good suggestions above...

Don's Seafood Cajun
Poor Boys Riverside Inn-Cajun
Judice Inn-burgers

Lagneaux's
Gator Cove
Prejean's
Randols cajun
Charlie G's upscale
Ruths Chris steak, way overpriced

Agave
Guama's
LaFondas
El Portillo (authentic, low prices)

Deano's Pizza
Southside bakery-burgers, plus more

Breaux's Mart serves up a great plate lunch (N Side)

just stay away from fast food and you'll be fine

I completely concur with all the above, so I'll just add some of my favorites not yet mentioned.

Cajun
Blue Dog Cafe
Pat's in Henderson

Italian
Alesi's - been there for spaghetti and meatballs regularly since 1963 (I kid you not!)
iMonelli - expensive, but worth it (fried calamari and Veal Parmesan)
Bella Figura - great tomato soup, etc., etc...
Marcello's - fried mozzarella for appetizer. Great wine selection
Nash's - Extensive Italian menu. Fish Beignets for appetizer!

Tex-Mexican
Coyote Blue's - kitchen talent far exceeds that of the service dept. (but, not always)
Picante's - Picante Nachos and Arroz con Pollo
Casa Ole - Good Burritos (must be under different leadership than when they first horribly opened many years ago)

Mexican
Las Mayas
La Hacienda

Burgers
Morvant's
Max's
Ground Patti (Lafayette-based chain)
Fat Pat's

Asian
Buffet City
Lotus Garden

Greek - Lebanese
Venusian Grill
Zeus Cafe
Athena's

Po-Boys
Old Tyme Grocery- shrimp, catfish, oyster and meatball
Chris' Po-Boys - shrimp, catfish and Chris' Special

Cuban
Cafe Habana - don't expect Mexican, but expect to go away full and satisfied

BBQ
AB Henderson's! - Brisket

In the "Haven't been, but want to try" category:
Joey's Meat Market (plate lunches)
Jolie's Louisiana Bistro (Seafood?)
Poche's in Cecilia (plate lunches?)
Driftwood Diner (? - best I can tell its a mix of Vietnamese and Cajun, if you can imagine that)
Phare's (Seafood?)
Green Olive (Greek and Lebanese)
Mazen Grill (????)
Pimon Thai (take a guess)

In the "Haven't been in a while, but loved it" category:
Julien's Po-Boys
Dwyer's Downtown (plate lunches)
Dwight's (plate lunches and BBQ)
Antler's (just a cool place with great food, etc.)

I'm sure I'll think of some more...

For boudin, go to either Don's Specialty Meats or The Best Stop. For traditional Italian and not a chain restaurant, try Antoni's Italian Cafe'. I ate there and it was just as good as the food I had while stationed for two years in Italy. Here's their website with their menu.
