Wanted: Family ordinated things to do???? (Baton Rouge, Shreveport: city hall, to buy, schools)

We are soo new to this area the first thing people ask us is "where are you from". Been here a month or so, moved down here from Olympia WA.

We dont have any family or friends down here, and every where me and my husband go we need to bring the kids with. Looking for festivals, get togethers, parks, events, whatevah!!!

Is there one place in general where this stuff is listed? I have been going from web-site to web-site and finding only a couple things at a time...

For family-oriented activities, just google 'family activities xxxxx' (the x's are where you'd put your zip code), plenty should come up. We used to buy the local newspaper and they have a Weekend section w/ lots of events, I bet Friday's and Sunday's papers post them too. You can also go to www.meetup.com and put in activities you're interested in (sports, mom's groups etc) w/ your zip and you'll prob. find a slew of activities. Getting involved w/ your kids' school and meeting other parents would prob. work too. It takes a while but w/ young kids, it shouldnt be too hard. Good luck and have fun.

The Baton Rouge newspaper has a " Fun " section . I don't remember which day . It lists everthing that is going on in this area . Somebody here will know which day it comes out .

The first step would be to narrow down your area so locals can help. The zip in your profile shows you to be in the Lafayette area. Is that correct?

Festivals and such are often covered in the local news websites; KLFY or KATC dot com.

There is a local newspaper; theadvertiser dot com. Especially useful to you will be the Times of Acadiana (theres a link from the newspaper main page).

I'd recommend local radio, but that really depends on your taste.

That's a start, maybe others will chime in on specifics. Anyone know where to find the Downtown Alive information online?

Have you ever tried geocaching? It's a great way to explore new places and can involve the entire family. Lot's of great caches to be found in the Acadiana area. Go to geocaching dot com.

Welcome to Lafayette I'm sure you'll get into the groove pretty quick.

The one thing you don't want to miss is Chrismas festitivities in Louisiana.

The Rose Garden in Shreveport off Greenwood Road is awsome. The year I was there the garden added a million lights, music, hot chocolate,*life size christmas cards bu kids for kids and more.

The Christmas festivities at Nachitoches is called a "Can't Miss" event.

St. Francisville. The Myrtles Plantation and the Catholic Church Big surprises in both.

The Gonzales City Hall is indescribable. You have to see it to understand it.; take your camera We stopped at a Chinese Buffet that had food tthat was sooooo good.

Baton Rouge North Boulevard's Festival of Lights and the Cajun Christmas Dance. Cajun Christmas stories for children are special.

Like most of our festivals, it's music, dancing, food, and crafts. If you go, bring some bread for the ducks. Girard park has plenty of ducks, geese, squirrels, and other birds. Ducks are friendly, watch out for the geese cause they like to goose.
