Hey yall,
Im jamie, im 21 from arkansas and i am planning on moving to louisiana within the next 12 to 18 months. But i do not have a particular place in mind. Heres what im looking for, a small town with a bigger city an hour or two away. Preferably with bayou or swamp access close to the town, because i have a boat and really enjoy outdoor activities. If anyone could point me in a certain direction, perhaps some of you live in a place like this, i would greatly appreciate it.
thank you all
jamie

I will answer your friendliness question as best I can. From my experiences, you have a "yes" and "no" answer there. For example, there are essentially 3 different cultures that exist in Louisiana. New Orleans (big city, Creole/African/Italian/French), Acadiana (Cajun/Creole generally smaller town but Lafayette is blowing up), and North Louisiana (Deep South Bible Belt, mostly small town as well). When I'm in a club in New Orleans trying to pass people, the light tap on the shoulder to people and a polite "Excuse me" often does nothing, and sometimes warrants a clueless/rude stare from the person in my way. In Acadiana, people will move right away, and may even say, "oh, sorry!". In North Louisiana they will go all out of there way, make a ton a space for you, and insist on you passing before them.

That being said, chances are the people in New Orleans who act this way may very well be from up North, California or Miami, since I've mostly had these experiences at Tulane/Loyola area bars, and the majority of students there aren't from Louisiana. Native New Orleanians are generally friendly, but you have to take into account that it is a city, and the pace is faster than the rest of the state. So if you're coming from the East or West Coasts, I bet you'll be pleasantly surprised at the warmth of people. If you're from the Deep South or rural Midwest, you may not feel as flattered.

Louisiana has a Festival every weekend somewhere in the state for every vegetable, mineral or critter known to man. Nah, folks aren't friendly down here... they just party like rock stars for any reason and all have crows feet from smiling constantly. And then there is the food. A meal isn't just for fuel down here. It is a social daily gathering.

Maybe those facts will paint a picture for you.
