So my girlfriend and I are both interested in transfering to SELU to finish school. We are both raised in Ohio and plan to visit in December, but the more I read on here about Hammond the more people seem to have a real negative view on the area recently. We are from the Dayton/Cincinnati area so we know what crime is like so I guess my question is this. The crime, is the majority of it confined to specific places (Like here)? Also, apartments in the area aren't well advertised on the net, can anyone give me some names to look up?

I live in Hammond, graduated from SLU in 2007. I work in Baton Rouge though. Its growing, there's a new shopping mall. There aren't many restaurants though. Hammond is equal distance from Baton Rouge and New Orleans, and right on the Northshore, so you have access to wherever. The population of Hammond is roughly 18,000 people, so the crime is average, not like bigger cities. Check craigslist apartments (Baton Rouge or New Orleans) and used the search term "Hammond". Also, check out the classifieds section on hammondstar.com. Be reminded, you will be moving to the country!

Hammond in my opinion is an "average", "nothing special" type place that is in a really great region. If you have a car (which you will NEED to have!!) there's enough to do in the vicinity to make going to school there justified. Places like Independence, Covington, Abita Springs, Pontchatoula, etc. are all relatively close and make for interesting day trips! Being from New Orleans I always enjoyed getting into the piney woods up there and being removed from the city for a while. And of course New Orleans is a little over an hour away, you will be making weekend trips..any college student in South Louisiana does this from time to time! I think you could make a really good experience living there...
