I'll just cite a 2009 ranking, but Audubon came in at #10, while Houston was #6.

So much subjectivity here that you can't go wrong with either. I love the Audubon Zoo, not to forget the aquarium!

If you want to consider aquariums and insectariums then New Orleans is your best bet. The Houston aquarium just doesn't compare.

Houston Zoo -- hands down. They have so many babies now and the actual Zoo grounds are beautiful. Two baby elephants are absolutely charming. Their baby meerkats are now teens. Baby duiker, Giant eland, etc... Their Flamingo chicks are on exhibit and are now just starting to grow their bright feathers. But they also just added a huge development called The AFrican Forest, and they have a family of 10 chimps your kids (and you) will be very excited to watch. You could spend an hour just with them. And their giraffes now have a feeding platform. I think they feed twice a day, you buy lettuce and get to give it to them. Don't know when you're thinking of going but call to see if the giraffes will be out. They are needing to re-do their yard due to mud so the feedings were put on hold for a bit. No matter, it's still a great Zoo. You can check their website (or download a free iphone App) to check out over 30 keeper chats and animal feedings, kids story time, etc.. every day. Aquarium is a small part, so unless your main focus is fish, I'd vote for the Houston Zoo!
