Here in San Antonio, where we have like 2.3 million people, we only have one Whole Foods, and I'm happy with that. The store has a few cool things, but there are other alternative grocery stores that aren't nearly as pretentious. I've found people to be a bit more rude in Whole Foods in any town I've shopped at one, but it could just be my own experience, who knows. One thing I really liked about living in Baton Rouge was the abundance of produce markets (like Fresh Pickins, Southside Produce, etc).

Lafayette's fine without Whole Foods. Rouses is great, and I remember how excited folks seemed to be in Youngsville when the new one opened a while back.

Whole Foods is overpriced and the food isn't as "whole" as they would like you to think. Trader Joes and Fresh Market are much better IMO. I'll shop at the higher end Rouse's and Robert's before I go to Whole Foods.

Ok, I just went to Rouses for the first time and I am absolutely in love with the place For one thing their deli/bakery is out of this world and the SUSHI. OMG THE SUSHI.
WIll be going back in the very very near future. No wonder Whole Foods turned tail.

Agreed! I haven't used Rouses for true grocery shopping, but I'm at the new Bertrand store frequently for items like potato salad, etc. (sides), breads, or meat. Haven't tried the deli, but I hear their pizza is pretty good. At the Youngsville store, I bought a jalapeno cornbread with cheese that was awesome, but Bertrand doesn't offer it, so you may have to switch stores on occasion depending what you want. In a strange sort of way, I like that. Some degree of independence per location...

Regarding Whole Foods, I'm pretty confident that they remain committed to opening here. I think what happened with that sudden retraction of the press release was the result of a bit of panic at Whole Foods corporate headquarters when their non-binding letter of intent (LOI) got blasted all over the place as though it were a done deal. THAT'S a no no. I'd have retracted as well, just to leave my options open.

We'll see.
