Hello -

I recently moved to New Orleans a couple weeks ago. I'm going to be here for at least eleven months doing an Americorps program, but when it's over, I may return home to my home state (although I may stay -- I love it here -- but I do want to be closer to friends and family). I know you're SUPPOSED to change your license and plates after thirty days, but is there any way you can legally keep your home state's plates and registration if you know you may be returning home after a certain period of time? For the record, my home state is too far away for me to drive back and just renew my registration there. Please don't "flame" me -- I just have never had to change my state's plates before and don't know much about the process. I just know it seems like it's going to be pretty expensive to get an LA license and plates and then (potentially) turn around and get my home state's license and plates again in eleven months.

I know students are able to keep their homeplates, as I can legally keep mine in Texas. I'm not too sure if work is a passible excuse.
