I believe this is the second time this has happened at Southland Field. As a professional pilot, this is something I pray I never do, if only for the embarrassment. But, I can see how this can happen, especially after reading the whole story...

Southland is the magenta airport in the center of the image, with Lake Charles Regional to the right (in blue) eight miles to the east. Same main runway heading.

Quote:
Continental Connection Flight 3222, which originated from Houston, was bound for Lake Charles, La., with 23 passengers and three Colgan Air crew members aboard on Sept. 7. The aircraft, however, landed some eight miles away at Southland Field, a private airport to the west in Carlyss, La.

"Even though Colgan Flight 3222 from Houston to Lake Charles, La., landed safely at Southland Field, we are taking this incident very seriously," read a statement from Colgan spokeswoman Amy Howell. "Safety is a top priority for Colgan, and when the investigation is complete, we will file a report with the FAA and take any actions that are warranted."

What kind of charges can be brought upon the pilot? At $12.50 an hour, I see why he might have crashed...

That will be up to the FAA. Probably a hefty fine to the airline and some retraining for the crew. At least no physical damage nor injury occurred.

Is it the pilots fault? And I always thought the receiving airport guided the planes, to tell them which lanes are clear, etc.

They could have at least stopped and ask for directions.

It's the pilots fault all right . At the least he will have partial blame .I used to work with a guy that was flying from BR to Florida . He wandered into military air space . The tower contacted him and told him to follow their directions and land NOW . He was met on the runway by a group of armed MP's . They escorted him to a briefing room where he was read the riot act . The FAA was notified and he caught hell from them also .

It was a Continental Connection flight using a Saab 340 aircraft.
