Don't move to New Iberia, or the surrounding area of small towns. It is culturally, ethically, religously and morally a dead place, with pockets of intelligent, warm, and tolerant people whose eyes don't cross at the thought of someone different from them moving into town. Your monthly income should be fine, as long as you don't expect too much for it. Plan on living next to or surrounded by sugar cane fields and everything that sugar production entails. Every summer begins the 'hurricane season worries'. On the plus side, property taxes are low.

New Iberia? Not my favorite place, but out of curiosity, what did you experience there that lead to your animosity of the area?

Just keep in mind that it is the home to one of the largest "rural" Laotian communities in the US, perhaps due to the shrimping industry, not to mention the huge oilfield presence which has ALWAYS drawn international influences and residents.

All true.

No kids in school so I really don't care what the schools are like.

Both native born US Citizens and don't mind multicultural areas. We are currently teachers in China and will continue doing that until we retire.

I am a US Treasury Department licensed Enrolled Agent so I would set up a small business doing tax returns and light level accounting work.

Since our kids are all grown, we don't need a huge house. At my age I don't even want a huge house. 3 Bedrooms is fine, 2 baths. Budget $75,000 so a Manufactured home is fine. No Community Associations. No Neighbor Nazis. We had our fill of them when we lived in Arizona.

I speak Spanish as well as English (and Japanese and Mandarin).

Wife is a teacher with 25+ years experience and is NOT looking to work - at all - but may be willing to do some volunteer work.

I like salt water fishing. She likes coffee Klotches. (yes, we are both Jewish).

We are tired of being cold and want a place where "winter" is an unknown concept.

OK, convince me that Louisiana is the place to retire to and where.
Flyingifr, seriouly, why your wife and you not stay in Nanjing?
Nanjing is a very nice, wonderful city (I bet there is not a easy job for Louisiana people to think about a town with over 3 million people in the town).
Would you find any U.S major city as safe as Nanjing?I bet you not.
