LSU / Tulane

Which city do you think is better as an older (~29) graduate student. Single and nonreligious if it makes a difference to your opinion. I wouldn't want to live on Campus but near it.

Well as far as keeping yourself entertained. You will have more venues for your age group. Baton Rouge can be fun as well but nothing like New Orleans. Can you visit?

I'd rather not visit, at least not yet. I'm going to apply to a few schools and am just trying to narrow down my applications. I don't want to apply to both LSU and Tulane. Once I get offers from schools then I'll make visits between those.

What about cost of living and safety? Would a car be required in both? I'll be at the school most of the time and living off teaching assistanceships/savings/grants so these things are a bit more important to me.

You can live without a car in New Orleans in the Tulane area, in Baton Rouge you could live on campus or literally on the skirts of campus without a car although you will need a taxi or bus for some further needs like doctor, groceries, etc. Overall I wouldn't recommend living in Baton Rouge without a car.

I've never done college or graduate work in New Orleans but I grew up there my feeling is that the many distractons may be an issue. I went to LSU in Baton Rouge and around campus it's a relatively wholesome and more studious environment (for those well beyond age 18 anyway). I'd say if you want the ability to focus intently on your work, go there.

There are plenty of distractions around LSU. Have you not been to Tigerland bars and clubs? I don't see how Tulane would be a less studious environment than LSU.
He or she is 29, I'm sure they can stay focused even in New Orleans, a freshman is a different story.
