Isn't this is a rehashed topic of the exact same thing you said, maybe, a year earlier? I find some common ground with you here that I think Lafayette's downtown/freetown/northside area has crazy potential and I'm tired of all the money and development moving further south and further outward. If you can find some, any city of a mere 120,000 inhabitants filled with skyscrapers, you be sure to let me know. Then I will say Lafayette has some explaining to do.

Hopefully never. On the other hand I despise the urban sprawl /chain store nightmare that the southside and extreme northside has become.

I used to live behind Bordon's Ice Cream and then in the 'hood on off Pinhook and the Evangeline Thruway, I just love those old houses back there. Eventually enough like-minded people will begin to revitalize these areas just like the Bywater neighborhood or the Irish Channel in New Orleans. But in the meantime, more strip malls/subdivisions will spring up. The "southside mentality" prevails in Lafayette for now.

I have seen comments in other forums about when such and such a city will build more skyscrapers. I just have to laugh as these (probably very young) posters fail to realize that there should be a need for extra office space. Heck, we have more office space now than we know what to do with

Can I ask what the tallest building in Lafayette is? While I in downtown Lafayette earlier this year, I did notice that most of the buildings weren't tall, but it still did not feel like it was "too low rise" to me. I still felt like I was in a place that looks like a lot of fun happens at night. Correct me if I'm wrong?

P.S. Skyscrapers aren't always necessary, but some mid to high rise buildings [even if it's not many of them] do make a downtown feel more like a city from a further view.

I think it's the white Chase Bank building, if not that one it's probably the Iberia Bank building. And yeah, that city is so much fun. About 2 years ago they banned drinking on the street which diminished things a little, but I still would rather go out there than New Orleans. It's more the people that make it great for me.

Lafayette has year round music events and festivals, in addition to several prominent restaurants and clubs downtown.
The young college crowd keeps the place hopping at night downtown.
Its pretty awesome most of the time.
