I lived in Slidell for a while and I lived in Chalmette pre-Katrina. You have to be careful when picking an area around NOLA. Covington & Mandeville are very nice, I visited often. If you ever venture to the quarter, you will fall in love. They have rentals right in the middle of the quarter, but it can get loud (obviously), but for some, it's perfect. Just stay away from the 9th ward!

You'll want to be on the Northshore. Close to the beach, New Orleans but far enough away from the weirdos.
