We are looking into moving to SE Louisiana in the near future. We have one child who will need special education services. We need a town with affordable housing and a decent school system. Do any of these towns fit the bill ?

Kentwood
Independence
Loranger
Robert
Tickfaw
Albany
Holden
Ponchatoula
Franklinton

Thanks for the help

I know I would be worried moving to such small areas like Kentwood, Independence, Tickfaw, Holden, etc. I'd only feel comfortable in larger areas with options for care and education in case you needed such services. You would be close enough to Hammond and other areas though.

Thanks for the reply. It makes sense that it would be more comfortable being near larger areas. We are in New Jersey now so i suppose its different here. We live in a small rural town and the education is excellent. I would prefer the same kind of town. I do not like traffic very much. Do you know any particulars about the towns listed in regards to their education and overall quality of life? Here in New Jersey the small towns actually have a better school system than the larger cities. I assume its not necessarily the same there.

I do not know about the school systems or much about the areas in question. Generally suburban areas have the better services and overall quality of life here. Although you can find small towns with great quality of life, I just could not tell you where exactly to look in this area. You'll be close enough to Hammond though, and I imagine Ponchatoula wouldn't be bad but I couldn't tell you much about it other than festivals.

My sister teaches in the Loranger school district and that is considered to be a good school district. Ponchatoula is also considered to be a good school district. I would say no to Kentwood, Independence, Tickfaw, or Franklinton as I don't think those are good schools. Holden might be okay but it's very small.

Thank you for the reply. Do you know if Loranger has schools for all grades, Elementary through High School?

Yes, they have K-12. It's rural area but people move there to be in that school district.

Thanks. I have relatives in the area so I've been to Loranger several times. I do like the rural character of the area as well.

I'm mostly familiar with Nw La. resources but you may want to check the state website for resource assistance:

Louisiana Believes - Louisiana Department of Education

Good Luck on your move.

It has been 8 years since I built in Washington Parish. I have been in the area for over 25 years. I hate Franklinton,La. It didn't take long to find out how poorly the local government is run. St Tammany Parish, which,is right next to Franklinton has magnificent schools. Check that parish, I promise, you will not be disappointed.
