Actually the petrochemical industry IS the economy of Lake Charles.

Resource extraction is not what LC does, it is refining and changing petro products into other things. There is some pollution, mostly air but some water. However, most of the $70K+ jobs come from that sector.

Many of the parks in Lake Charles had significant donations from various oil companies, for instance the PPG Interactive fountain is a favorite among kids.

Would I have preferred if LC had high tech industries instead of oil companies? Yes. But it doesn't. However, the things that make LC great wouldn't be there without the industry there.

Yes, the Bayou Corne sinkhole is a disaster. Apparently the aquifer was breached by the sinkhole recently.

Check out Steamboat Bill's (Cajun food), go to Tony's Pizza (Italian), and Peking Garden on Broad St (absolutely the best Chinese food ever).

Drive the Creole Nature Trail and stop at the points along the way, you will learn a lot about the area. Visit Sam Houston Jones State Park, it is popular in the summer. Visit OB's (bar) if you want a good bar where everyone in the city is to be seen.

Bring the kids to Millenium Park, it's a lot of fun.
Thanks for this info. I forgot to check back for responses. Hopefully the weather will cool down a bit so we can enjoy some outdoor activities without suffering. Will make sure to bring bug spray, as noted.

Our area is zoned for Barbe Elementary I think, but wound up sending kid to OLQH. We're a couple blocks off Shell Beach which makes for nice walks at least.

So have you moved yet? What are your initial impressions? Sorry to break it to you but the weather won't cool down much for at least another month and a half. You'll have to learn to adjust to the heat eventually.

I have been in LC for a week and I am getting acclimated to the 10-15 minute monsoons that come storming down occasionally. I ended up building in Graywood against the advice of some of the commenters because I thought it would be the best fit for my families needs. The Oaks was enticing but outside of my price range. I would like to thank CBach for the great advice on the cultural things to do and restaurants to visit.

For anyone else who sees themselves as a young professional I'd like to hear what your thoughts are on the Fusion Five? Seems like a good organization to get involved with to network.

Graywood is nice, but make sure your lawn man and gardener keep every single weed out of the yard or you will be cited.
