Someone told me about houma and lake charles oilfield work years ago. If not Louisiana, my last resort would be North Dakota (cold but easier to find the jobs). But someone told me ND is not worth it due to weather alone when I could be in the south in nice warm weather and good cajun food. I've looked into craigslist and was surprised at how cheap and plenty of rentals there are in houma. I haven't looked into Lake Charles yet. I haven't seen much rentals in New Orleans since it is a "tourist city" so vacancies probably aren't as plenty. I was told NOLA has oilfield work too, but houma and lake charles is supposed to be better off (cheaper, less crime, more inland?, etc.). I was told NOLA is touristy and a "party town" so I'm not sure about being there to live. I could party there but probably not live there so I won't get distracted. Which city should I be looking into and why: Houma vs. Lake Charles.

Look at a map. Houma, Morgan City, and north to Lafayette are oilfeld-support central. New Orleans is too far away for a daily commute, but then many positions work 7&7, so you can drive much further for your week off.
Bottom line, visit these places and see what you think. Try July-August and enjoy the weather!

July to August is the most mild weather or what?

I will look in the map but are you saying Houma, Morgan City, and Lafayette are close enough with each other?

July to August is the worst time of summer. It will be a test to see if you can handle it.

Houma is a bit closer to New Orleans than Lafayette. Morgan City is a bit closer to Lafayette.

2 months isn't bad I'm sure compared to 8 months of winter in North Dakota.

I looked at apartments.com regarding morgan city apartments but morgan city "does not exist". Why? Is it within another city kinda like Brooklyn is in NYC?

That's weird. Morgan City is a municipality within two parishes. Not sure why they can't find it. Can you use a zip code on the website?

I just tried the zip codes 70380 and 70381 and it says "no match" on apartments.com.
