Hi there,
I'm a young adult moving to Natchitoches this fall and while the internet provides some information, overall I haven't found it very helpful. I would really appreciate anyone's thoughts on what there is to do in Natchitoches and if there are any interesting stores/places that only local people would know about. Are there any farmer's markets in the area?
Honestly, any information anyone can provide about Natchitoches would be really helpful!

Why are you moving there? I was sent to work in Natchitoches right after graduating by my company but didn't stay too long. It's a small town but has a state university there. Crime is pretty high as normal in most of Louisiana. Cost of living very low. I found the people there pretty country and friendly. Shreveport is a decent sized city about an hour away.

Tall Traveler, thank you for your reply! I'm moving there for graduate school. It's the only reason I knew about Natchitoches at all! When you say crime is high, what would you say are the most common crimes committed there and are there any specific precautions you would suggest I take? I did research that information, but would like the opinion of someone like you who has lived there. Is Shreveport worth a visit?

I would try to get suggestions on areas to live from a contact at the University. For general information on crime, you can look at the City Data site on cities and see that in general the crime rate is higher than the national average....don't know where you're coming from but many areas in Florida also have a high crime rate so you need to take the same type of precautions.
Shreveport/Bossier is worth a visit as it's the only city near Natchitoches. They have nice restaurants, bars, casinos, shopping, etc in that area.
I believe that Natchitoches is the oldest community in Louisiana.

Natchitoches, LA. is pretty quiet. It's been rated among the top small southern towns for B&B's, hospitality, etc. It's the oldest town in Louisiana as it was settled in 1714. NSU is a pretty good school and much of anything to do revolves around the school. Decent restaurants and outdoor activities. Christmastime has the big festival and if you've ever seen the movie:
"Steel Magnolias" then you've seen Natchitoches. Shreveport is less than an hour north via I-49 so you can get a fix of a bigger city when you need. I know people who commute from Natchitoches to Shreveport for work.

Nack.uh.deesh Is the oldest continuous settlement on the Louisiana Trace. The movie Steel Magnolias was filmed there. The house featured in the movie is now a B&B, so you might want to stay one night. I love the wrought iron balconies, and it's on the Cane River.

Natchitoches was rated the #1 small town in the South just recently.
Best Southern Small Town Winners: 2015 10Best Readers' Choice Travel Awards
Everything revolves around NSU (Northwestern State University). There is a neat Hall of Sports museum downtown, the town is famous for being the oldest in the Louisiana Purchase (includes states from Louisiana all the way to Montana), Natchitoches Meat Pies (go to Lasyones), and the Christmas festival. The Christmas festival is gigantic, over 100,000 turn out.
It is a quiet, gentle, southern way of life that is suitable for many people but not all. Weekends are spent either watching football games in the fall, doing the Christmas festival in the winter, or out on the river and lakes in the spring and summer. The Cajun food is delicious and there are several places that do it right, including one on Sibley Lake (the Landing).
The town has LSMSA, the best high school in the state, its graduates regularly go to Harvard, Stanford, Duke, Yale, Rice, and other top universities.
For a small size town, it packs a large punch.
