List your priorities, choice what is best for you and your family and welcome to the great state of Louisiana!
The closest refineries are Citgo in LKC and Port Allen Placid and Exxon Mobil Baton Rouge.

Lafayette is miles better than Alexandria in nearly every single category.

Why Alexandria was even on your radar is beyond me. Although it could be worse...it could be Opelousas.

People mention the oil industry in Lafayette but Lafayette doesn't have any refineries as there is no major port there. It basically has the offices for all of the offshore oil operations in the Gulf of Mexico and a lot of companies that service the helicopters, rigs, etc...

Well hey, I'm suited for office work. It's what I got my BA in. Business Management. What about cost of living, is it fair in Broadmoor or Youngsville?

Alright, well say if I can't land something to stay in Youngsville (I'm going through all sorts of scenarios here) what outlying communities would be best alternatives?

Crowley seemed good in terms of commute, not employment.

Don't go west to like Crowley. If you have to, go southwest like to Abbeville. Abbeville is a very nice town, called the "most Cajun city in the most Cajun parish in Louisiana".

Avoid.
Try Abbeville, Breaux bridge, broussard, or Carencro/Sunset. Avoid opelousas.
