The US is actually the richest country in the world if you go by GDP alone.

However, the majority of the wealth is owned by a few individuals. Average wealth is not an accurate way to calculate what the masses make. Take Bill Gates and the truck driver Bob, for example. Gates made $4 billions last year. Truck driver Bob made $60K last year. The average of their incomes is a little over $2 billions. This number is misleading because Bob does not get to share Gates' wealth.
