My husband and I are coming to New Orleans for jazz fest the weekend of the 25th (we are soooo excited!!) We are not that familiar with the area, and was wondering if you have any tips for us. We'll be staying at the Mariott in the French Quarter. How safe is it to walk around at night? Should I avoid carrying a purse? Is it easy to get around taking cabs? Any fun cafe's or restaurants you would recommend? Thanks in advance!

Just a few Do's and Don'ts for the fest:
Do's: camera, wide brim hats, comfy shoes, sunscreen, plastic bags/panchos for wearing and sitting, folding chairs with carry bags optional (I find these cumbersome), comfy clothes to sweat in, backpack/large hobo bag, cash, blankie to sit on, a couple of bottles of water (never opened) in cozies (I don't bother with the small soft ice cooler), stay hydrated; I've seen plenty people fall out due to too much alcohol and not enough water, and take your patience because the large crowds can work on some people's nerves
Don'ts: don't overload yourself with stuff, don't wear yourself out if there is going to be a long walk back to the car, don't buy "tickets" from some guy on the street,
Oh and DO have a great time!

PS. You'll be fine in the Quarter at night, but the later it gets the better off you'll be if you stick to the more touristy areas like Bourbon St. Cafe Maspero on Decatur St. is pretty good for a po-boy, if you're looking for something out of the Quarter try Mandana's on Canal.

Some of the bars in the Quarter used to run buses to the fiargrounds, not sure if they still do, but it was a geart way to get there and back. Parking can be quite a hassle.

The streetcar gets you pretty close too, right? I'm not sure about their schedule though.

New Orleans Regional Transit Authority :
Look for the Canal Line. That should go up towards City Park and I think it turns towards the Fairgrounds.

If you are from out of town and not familiar with the area I would recommend a taxi or shuttle. Taking the streetcar to City Park is feasable, but just like taking your own car there will be a walk and if you're from out of town you'll need to bring a map to navigate the neighborhood to get to the race track.
