Relocating in New Orleans (Mandeville, Covington: houses, schools, to live)

I have read through these forums and have seen this topic several different times, but not recently. I am looking at relocating to the New Orleans vacinity for a job. My husband and I are empty nesters so schools are not a concern. His job will be in or around the northshore area so we have been looking from Covington/Mandeville to Gulfport. He will be somewhere in the middle of that. He would love to have a beach house but it doesn't seem that the beach areas have made much of a return since Katrina. In addition, on our visits, it seems that you can't really be on the beach but more accurately you are across from it. We drove through Waveland and it was a ghost town. Why hasn't it made any headway in returning? I have read on here that one of the drawbacks to LA is that "you don't have a beach". what am I missing? Isn't Waveland up to gulfport considered a beach?



We (me) would prefer an area that gives the amenities I am used to (coming from Raleigh, NC) like Instacart and Amazon prime. It does appear that Instacart exists in the Covington area but Amazon is only on the NO side of the river (which is a bummer!).


We would also like to have a place where we can keep our boat and not have to keep paying for storage. Any input on the beach areas and your thoughts on the cities is appreciated.

Waveland and Gulfportis in Mississippi. Lol Louisiana beaches are 3 hours away from New Orleans. I'm not sure what you mean about "across from it", you can't live across from a beach in Louisiana unless your on an island on the coast.

Amazon reaches everywhere I have no idea what you're talking about there. I have Amazon Prime and I delivered them around the northshore.

Beach houses are in Mississippi so you should go to that forum. You can keep them at marinas around Lake Pontchartrain but no beaches.

My bad, I thought if I mentioned the geography from LA to MS it would be clear. Obviously not. I have exceeded the time limit to edit and make clearer.



I'm actually surprised you haven't taken a drive up the coast to know that there is a road between the beach and the first row of houses in those areas (hence the "across from it"). The Amazon I mention is Prime NOW not standard prime. On my visit, I looked at my app and it didn't show available.



I also didn't realize that the two states, that border one another so closely in this area, would require a post in each forum, but now that I do, I will move over.

Well you said it as if you can live on a beachfront in New Orleans metro area and that's just not true. I've been to the coast but I thought you were referring to the backside of an island close to the mainland like the west side of south beach Miami.
Prime Now, ok. Didn't realize that was a thing. New Orleans doesn't strike me as an area that would have Prime Now, yet. It's a poor area.

This forum is heavily focused on the city of New Orleans itself, not much talk about suburbs and far less about Mississippi cities.

I think Bay St. Louis is pretty nice

Bay St. Louis is your answer.

Waveland hasn't totally returned because people have learned their lesson. A lot of that area is low-lying and people returned to their house to find nothing but the foundation and/or stilts. The ones directly near the water have returned, and that's the price you pay to live on the water. You really can't go wrong all the way from there to Pass Christian to Gulfport.

I wish my job was down there, I'd be there in a second.

OP, why don't you visit NOLA before you move? Gives you a chance to check it out in person, see what you like and don't like. You can definitely take tours and drive around.
