Hi, I appreciate constructive feedback and insights. I am a bit lost as both places have such strong pros and cons and unfortunately more cons it seems .

I am looking at a 20 mile radius around Hammond and towards NOLO to move to with my 10yr old son, or to the Mississippi Coast (Waveland to Gulfport).

Reasons are to be closest to job opportunities and somewhat affordable rentals. I have a BA and three years pre-med and am easily employable. I prefer to keep homeschooling my son if possible.

I work from home part-time but would like to work out of the house two to three days a week for some socialization. I am finding many affordable rentals within a 20 mile radius to Hammond and some okay rentals around the Gulfport area.

I want to make an educated choice.

My concerns are;

Safety
Job opportunities
Safe, somewhat affordable housing if possible (prefer a little cabin, home, cottage or mobile home).

Thank you so much!

Rental prices in Hammond are high due to the University. The area northeast of Hammond, around Loranger is a beautiful area (with rolling hills and dairy farms), but you will have a commute. I would consider the Denham Springs/Walker area, near Baton Rouge, as well. This area is growing and you should be able to find something in your price range. I think the best part of Louisiana is the Northshore (Mandeville, Covington, Madisonville), but it is one of the most expensive parts of the state to live. Not a fan of Gulfport - too many casinos and a high hurricane risk.

I don't mind a commute as it would only be for two or three days a week. Yeah, Covington, Mandeville and Madisonville are nice but as you said, so expensive. I have been looking there for two years now and cannot find anything affordable.

I will check out the Walker/ Denham Springs area for rentals. I am going to look at a cute house outside of Amite this Sunday.

I like Covington, LA. Hammond is pretty nice but has some high crime areas. The Biloxi/Gulfport area is better if you like the beach but worse if you worry about having to flee a hurricane coming in.

My sister lives in Amite, La and likes it but I wouldn't recommend it myself.

No offense but you should be able to afford Covington or anywhere in the state with a degree. What is your definition of affordable?

In general Louisiana isn't safe and job opportunities are bad, especially in a small town like Hammond. Have you looked on the westbank?

Have lived on the Northshore for 30 years. Hammond is not known to be a high crime area, unless you live in the wrong area; it's all relative. It is certainly not as affluent as Mandeville or Covington though. I think really anywhere on the Northshore, including Hammond, Ponchatoula, Mandeville, Covington, Madisonville, are pretty good areas to live. Hammond has more of a small town feel than Mandeville, Covington, and Madisonville, which for the most part, are bedroom communities for NOLA. Also, Hammond has a fairly large university, which is a big plus. With that said, the best area to live near Hammond, is the Loranger area. I like Mandeville and Covington too, but they have a completely different 'feel'. Upscale and affluent... Ponchatoula is my least favorite. Don't find it particularly friendly. Huge mosquitoes. A strange little town, IMO..

Ponchatoula is rated as one of the worst places to live in the entire state. Especially true for crime.
